Camp and Emergency Stoves: The Definitive Buyer's Handbook

Why This Guide Exists

The power goes out on a Tuesday evening. Dinner is half-prepared, the electric range is dead, and two kids are asking when they can eat. You step onto the back porch, set the camp stove on the concrete, light it on the first try, and finish cooking in twenty minutes. The power comes back on at midnight, but your household ate a warm meal at a normal hour because one piece of equipment was stored, fueled, and ready.

Camp stoves are the most accessible off-grid cooking tool for most households. They use familiar fuels, require minimal skill, and cost between $25 and $250. But they also produce carbon monoxide, a gas that kills without warning, and the single most important thing this guide teaches is that no camp stove designed for outdoor use belongs inside your home, your garage, or your tent.

This guide covers the five major fuel types, what distinguishes a good emergency stove from a good backpacking stove, how to store fuel safely, and the carbon monoxide rules that the CPSC and CDC have published because people keep getting this wrong.

Where will you cook? Every camp stove in this guide is designed for outdoor use. That means a porch, a patio, a driveway, or a campsite. If you live in an apartment with no outdoor space, a camp stove may not be the right answer for you, and the alternatives section below explains what is.

How many people are you feeding? A single backpacking stove boils water for one or two people. A two-burner car-camping stove cooks a full meal for a family. The number of people determines the stove size, the burner count, and how much fuel you need to store.

What fuel can you reliably get? Propane is available at hardware stores, gas stations, and grocery stores in most of the United States. Isobutane-propane canisters are found at outdoor retailers but not at every corner store. White gas is a specialty fuel. The fuel you can buy where you live matters more than the fuel that performs best on paper.

Is this for emergencies, camping, or both? An emergency stove sits in storage for months or years and then needs to work on the first try. That favors propane, which ignites reliably and stores indefinitely. A backpacking stove needs to be light and compact. A car-camping stove prioritizes cooking surface area. Few stoves are ideal for all three.

Do you have a safe outdoor cooking spot? The stove needs a level, stable, non-flammable surface outdoors, at least 20 feet from your home, garage, tent, or any window, door, or vent. The CDC specifies this distance for generators, and the same principle applies to any device that produces carbon monoxide.2

The Most Important Section

Carbon Monoxide: What Every Stove Buyer Needs to Know

Every camp stove in this guide burns fuel. Every fuel that burns produces carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that the CDC describes as a poison that "kills without warning."2 It cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. The first symptoms are often mistaken for the flu: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea.

The rules are simple and non-negotiable:

  • Never use a portable camping stove inside a home, tent, or camper. The CDC states this plainly and without qualification.2
  • Never use any fuel-burning device inside a garage, basement, or enclosed porch. Even with windows and doors open, CO can accumulate to dangerous levels faster than ventilation can clear it.3
  • Maintain distance from the structure. Position the stove at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent to prevent exhaust from entering the home.2
  • Install CO detectors near every sleeping area. Battery-operated or battery-backup detectors are essential, especially when using any fuel-burning equipment outdoors near the home.2
  • Know the symptoms. Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, and confusion. If anyone in the household develops these symptoms while fuel-burning equipment is in use, move to fresh air immediately and call 911.1

The CPSC reports that since 2020, at least 12 people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning associated with camping equipment, including grills, lanterns, and stoves.1 Carbon monoxide is especially dangerous for pregnant women (it is toxic to an unborn child), infants, elderly individuals, smokers, and people with heart disease or anemia.1 At higher altitudes, the risk increases because the air already carries less oxygen.

This section comes first in this guide for a reason. The most important feature of any camp stove is not its BTU output or its fuel efficiency. It is whether the person using it understands that it must stay outdoors.

Five Fuel Types, Compared

The fuel determines the stove. Each fuel type has trade-offs that matter differently depending on whether you are car camping with a family, backpacking solo, or preparing for a multi-day power outage at home.

1. Propane

Propane is the most widely available camp stove fuel in the United States. It comes in disposable 1-pound (16.4 oz) canisters and refillable 20-pound tanks. It ignites reliably in a wide temperature range, requires no priming, and stores indefinitely in sealed containers because it does not degrade chemically.

Best for: Emergency preparedness, car camping, family cooking, anyone who wants the simplest possible operation.

Limitations: Propane canisters are heavy relative to their fuel content. A 1-pound canister provides roughly 1 to 2 hours of cooking time on a single burner. Performance decreases as the canister empties and in cold weather below about 30 degrees Fahrenheit, though propane handles cold better than butane.

2. Isobutane-Propane Canisters

The standard fuel for lightweight backpacking stoves. A typical canister holds 100 to 230 grams of a blended gas (usually about 80% isobutane and 20% propane). The stove screws directly onto the canister, making setup instant.

Best for: Backpacking, solo or two-person use, situations where weight and pack size matter most.

Limitations: Performance drops sharply below about 20 degrees Fahrenheit as the gas pressure inside the canister falls. Canisters are not refillable and generate waste. Availability outside outdoor specialty retailers is limited, which matters for emergency use.

3. White Gas (Naphtha)

A refined petroleum fuel designed specifically for camp stoves. It burns hotter and cleaner than kerosene or automobile gasoline, and it performs well at high altitudes and in cold weather where canister stoves struggle.

Best for: Cold-weather camping, high-altitude use, extended backcountry trips, users comfortable with maintenance.

Limitations: Requires a manual pump to pressurize the fuel bottle, and most white gas stoves require priming (pre-heating the generator tube with a small amount of fuel). Spilled white gas is flammable and evaporates quickly. Shelf life is 1 to 2 years once opened. The learning curve is steeper than propane or canister stoves.

4. Denatured Alcohol

Alcohol stoves are the simplest camp stoves in existence: a vessel that holds fuel and a flame. They have no moving parts, no jets, no regulators. The fuel is widely available at hardware stores and paint departments.

Best for: Ultralight backpacking, simplicity, backup stove for emergencies.

Limitations: Low heat output means slow boil times. The flame is nearly invisible in daylight, creating a burn risk if the stove is not obviously lit. Alcohol stoves are banned in many wilderness areas during fire restrictions. They produce carbon monoxide and require outdoor use, the same as any fuel-burning stove.

5. Wood (Biomass)

Wood-burning camp stoves use collected sticks, twigs, and pine cones as fuel. Fan-assisted models improve combustion efficiency and can charge small electronics through a thermoelectric generator.

Best for: Situations where fuel resupply is impossible, extended wilderness travel in wooded areas, off-grid living.

Limitations: Dependent on dry wood, which is not always available. Produces soot and requires regular stove cleaning. Prohibited in fire-restricted areas. Slower to reach cooking temperature than gas fuels. Not practical above the treeline or in wet conditions.

Stove Formats: Matching the Design to the Job

Two-Burner Car-Camping Stove

The workhorse for families and emergency preparedness. Two side-by-side burners, typically running on 1-pound propane canisters or a 20-pound tank via an adapter hose. Cooking surface large enough for a skillet and a pot simultaneously. Most models include a windscreen and fold flat for storage.

Emergency preparedness note: If you are buying one stove for your household and you have outdoor space, this is the format. It cooks real meals, uses the most widely available fuel, and operates simply enough that anyone in the household can use it. Store it with a 20-pound propane tank and an adapter hose, and you have cooking capacity for weeks.

Single-Burner Tabletop (Butane Cassette Stove)

Compact, inexpensive, and familiar to anyone who has used a hot plate. Runs on butane cassette canisters that click into place. Common in catering and outdoor Asian cooking. Some models include automatic safety shutoffs for overheating.

Emergency preparedness note: Butane cassette stoves are popular for emergency kits because of their low cost and ease of use. However, butane canisters perform poorly below about 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and they are less widely available than propane in rural areas. In 2026, the CPSC recalled a specific butane camping stove model (Ozark Trail BG2247A1) after 26 reports of the stoves exploding or catching fire, with 16 reported injuries including second-degree burns.4 Buy from established brands with safety certification, and inspect the canister seal and connection before every use.

Indoor use: Some butane cassette stoves are labeled for indoor use and include specific safety features such as auto-shutoff mechanisms. If and only if the manufacturer explicitly certifies the model for indoor use, it may be used indoors with ventilation. If the label does not say "indoor use," it is outdoor-only. Most are outdoor-only.

Canister Backpacking Stove

A burner head that screws directly onto an isobutane-propane canister. Weighs 3 to 8 ounces. Boils water in 3 to 5 minutes. Some models include integrated windscreens and piezo igniters.

Emergency preparedness note: Good as a lightweight backup stove, but not ideal as a household's primary emergency cooking solution. The canisters are small (each boils about 10 to 12 liters of water) and specialty-retail items. Best paired with a larger primary stove.

Liquid-Fuel (White Gas) Stove

The classic mountaineering stove. A refillable fuel bottle connects to the burner via a pump and hose. Priming (pre-heating the fuel line) is required on most models. Output is high, and performance in cold and altitude is excellent.

Emergency preparedness note: A capable stove, but the learning curve makes it a poor choice for a household where not everyone is comfortable with pump-and-prime operation. If you are already familiar with liquid-fuel stoves from backpacking, it serves well. If you are new to camp stoves, start with propane.

Multi-Fuel Stove

A variant of the liquid-fuel stove designed to burn white gas, kerosene, unleaded gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel. Jet changes and maintenance between fuel types are required.

Emergency preparedness note: The ability to burn whatever fuel is available sounds appealing for emergencies, but the operational complexity is significant. These are specialist tools for extended international travel or military use. For most households, a propane stove with a deep fuel supply is simpler and more reliable.

BTU Rating

BTU (British Thermal Unit) per hour measures heat output. A typical two-burner camping stove produces 10,000 to 20,000 BTU per burner. Higher is not always better: a very high BTU burner with poor windscreen design loses more heat to the environment than a moderate burner with effective shielding. For emergency cooking, 10,000 BTU per burner is enough to boil water and cook a meal.

Boil Time

How quickly the stove brings one liter of water to a rolling boil under controlled conditions. Canister stoves typically boil in 3 to 5 minutes; two-burner propane stoves in 4 to 8 minutes. Real-world times vary with wind, altitude, starting water temperature, and pot type. A lid on the pot is worth more than a higher BTU rating.

Burn Time

How long a single fuel charge lasts at a given setting. A 16.4-ounce propane canister typically provides 1 to 2 hours of cooking on a single burner at full output. A 20-pound tank lasts much longer. Manufacturers report burn time at maximum output, so real-world cooking (which uses lower settings for simmering) stretches the fuel further.

Simmer Control

The ability to reduce the flame to a low, steady output without flameout. Good simmer control matters for cooking meals rather than just boiling water. Propane and butane stoves generally offer fine flame adjustment. Some canister backpacking stoves have poor simmer control at low settings. Liquid-fuel stoves vary widely by model.

Wind Resistance

A stove that performs well in still air and fails in a 10 mph breeze is not a reliable emergency tool. Integrated windscreens, recessed burners, and low-profile designs all improve wind performance. On a two-burner stove, fold-up side panels serve as windscreens. On a canister stove, a separate windscreen that wraps around the stove and pot is worth its weight.

Choosing a Stove for Emergency Preparedness

A stove bought for emergencies has different requirements than a stove bought for weekend camping. It sits in a closet, a garage shelf, or a basement for months or years, and then it needs to work immediately when the power goes out or when you evacuate. The priorities are:

Reliable ignition after long storage. Propane stoves with piezo igniters light on the first click after sitting for a year. Liquid-fuel stoves with degraded gaskets may not. Test your stove at least once a year.

Fuel that stores indefinitely. Propane in a sealed cylinder does not degrade. White gas degrades in 1 to 2 years once opened. Isobutane-propane canisters last indefinitely when sealed. Plan your fuel type around storage life.

Simple operation. In a power outage, the person cooking may not be the person who bought the stove. Propane is light-and-cook. Liquid fuel requires pumping, priming, and jet cleaning. For a household where not everyone is mechanically inclined, simplicity saves time and prevents mistakes.

Fuel depth. A single 1-pound propane canister provides 1 to 2 hours of cooking. For a multi-day outage feeding a family, plan on 1 to 2 canisters per day for two cooked meals. A 20-pound refillable tank provides roughly 20 to 25 hours of cooking time and is far more economical per hour of use.

Safety

Fuel Storage and Handling

The stove is half the system. The fuel supply is the other half, and storing it incorrectly creates risks independent of the stove itself.

Propane cylinders should be stored upright, outdoors or in a ventilated shed or garage, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not store propane cylinders in temperatures above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not store them in a car trunk or inside the home. A leaking propane cylinder in an enclosed space is an explosion risk.

Isobutane-propane canisters should be stored at room temperature in a dry location. Do not puncture or incinerate empty canisters. Inspect for rust or damage before use. A canister with visible corrosion should be disposed of at a household hazardous waste facility, not used.

White gas and liquid fuels should be kept in their original containers with caps tightly sealed, in a ventilated area away from living spaces and ignition sources. Spilled white gas evaporates quickly and the vapors are flammable. Clean up spills immediately and ventilate the area.

Denatured alcohol stores well in sealed containers. The primary storage risk is that it is also a common household solvent, so it should be labeled clearly and stored where children cannot access it.

Special Situations

What If You Have No Outdoor Cooking Space?

Apartment dwellers, people in high-rise buildings, and anyone without access to a safe outdoor cooking area face a real constraint. A camp stove on a balcony may violate building codes or lease agreements, and an enclosed balcony is not "outdoors" for CO purposes.

Canned heat (Sterno-type fuel) is designed for indoor warming of food in catering. It burns at a low temperature and produces fewer emissions than pressurized gas fuels. It is not a full cooking solution, but it can warm pre-cooked meals and heat water slowly in a well-ventilated room.

Self-heating meal pouches use a flameless chemical reaction (typically calcium oxide and water) and produce no combustion gases. They require no stove at all.

No-cook emergency food plans are a valid preparedness strategy. Canned food, nut butters, dried fruit, crackers, and shelf-stable protein require no heat and no equipment. For a household that cannot cook outdoors, a food supply that does not require cooking is safer than improvising indoor use of a device designed for outdoor use.

After You Buy

Setup, First Use, and Ongoing Care

A camp stove that sits in storage untested is a liability, not an asset. These steps apply regardless of which stove you chose.

Test it the day you buy it. Take it outside, connect the fuel, light it, boil a pot of water, and cook something. Confirm the igniter works, the flame adjusts smoothly, and the pot sits stably. Return a defective stove before you need it.

Store it clean and dry. After each use, let the stove cool completely, wipe down the grates and burners, and store it in a dry location. Moisture corrodes connections and clogs jets.

Test it once a year. Light the stove, run it for five minutes, and verify the flame is stable and blue. An orange flame suggests poor combustion and increased CO production. Check fuel lines and connections for cracks or brittleness.

Rotate your fuel. Propane does not expire, but inspect cylinders for rust or dents annually. White gas should be replaced every 1 to 2 years if the container has been opened. Isobutane-propane canisters last indefinitely when sealed, but replace any canister with visible corrosion.
