Fire Extinguishers: The Definitive Buyer's Handbook

Why This Guide Exists

A dishtowel catches fire on a burner. You grab the extinguisher from under the sink, pull the pin, squeeze the lever, aim at the base, and it is out in four seconds. You open a window, wipe up the residue, and replace the dishtowel. The fire department is never called. That is how most home extinguisher uses go.

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that fire extinguishers successfully suppress the vast majority of fires where they are deployed, and a single unit is sufficient most of the time. But success depends on two things: having the right type, and knowing when to use it and when to leave. A wrong-class extinguisher on a grease fire can spread the fire. An extinguisher used on a fire that has already grown beyond a single object can give a false sense of control while escape routes close.

This guide covers what the classes on the label mean, how the rating numbers work, where to place extinguishers in a home, when to fight and when to evacuate, and how to maintain the units you buy so they work when you need them.

Four Questions to Answer First

What rooms and spaces need coverage? The kitchen, the garage, and the main living area are the three highest-priority locations in most homes. A workshop, a laundry room with a gas dryer, and each floor of a multi-story house are common additions. Each location may face a different fire risk.

What fire risks does each location have? The kitchen has cooking oil and electrical appliances. The garage has gasoline, solvents, and oily rags. The living area has fabric, paper, and electronics. Matching the extinguisher class to the location's actual risk is more useful than buying the biggest unit you can find.

Who will need to use it? The U.S. Fire Administration notes that you should select the largest fire extinguisher you can safely and comfortably operate.1 A 10-pound unit that a strong adult handles easily may be too heavy for a teenager or an older family member. Having a smaller unit that everyone in the household can lift and aim is better than a large unit that only one person can use.

Does anyone in the household know how to use one? Owning an extinguisher without practice is better than owning nothing, but it is worth less than most people assume. Many local fire departments offer free or low-cost hands-on training. The USFA recommends contacting your local fire department for training.1

The Basics

The Five Fire Classes and What They Mean for Your Home

Fire extinguishers are classified by the type of fire they can suppress. The classification system comes from NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, and the classes are printed on the extinguisher label along with pictographs showing what it covers.2

Class A covers ordinary combustibles: wood, paper, cloth, rubber, trash, and most plastics. This is the most common fire fuel in bedrooms, living rooms, and offices.1

Class B covers flammable liquids and gases: gasoline, oil, grease, solvents, oil-based paints, and propane. These fires are common in garages, workshops, and anywhere fuel or solvents are stored. Water is ineffective and often dangerous on Class B fires because it can spread the burning liquid.1

Class C covers energized electrical equipment: appliances, tools, computers, and anything plugged into an outlet. The extinguishing agent must be non-conductive. Once the equipment is unplugged and de-energized, the remaining fire becomes Class A or B depending on what is burning.1

Class D covers combustible metals like magnesium, lithium, and titanium. These are industrial fires. Unless you have a home machine shop working with exotic metals, Class D is not a household concern.1

Class K covers vegetable oils, animal oils, and fats in cooking appliances. NFPA 10 requires Class K extinguishers in commercial kitchens because standard ABC agents may not adequately suppress high-temperature cooking oil fires. For home kitchens, a multipurpose ABC unit handles most situations, but households that frequently cook with oil at high heat may benefit from keeping a small Class B:C or Class K extinguisher near the stove in addition to the ABC unit elsewhere.2

The Label Decoded

What the Numbers and Letters on the Label Mean

Every fire extinguisher carries a classification label like 2-A:10-B:C. The letters indicate which fire classes it covers. The numbers indicate how much firefighting capacity it provides against each class.

The number before the A represents a multiple of 1.25 gallons of water. A 2-A rating means the extinguisher provides the equivalent of 2.5 gallons of water applied to a Class A fire. A 4-A provides 5 gallons equivalent.1

The number before the B represents the approximate square footage of a Class B (flammable liquid) fire the unit can extinguish. A 10-B rating covers a 10-square-foot fire. A 40-B covers 40 square feet.1

The C carries no number. It simply indicates that the extinguishing agent is non-conductive and safe for use on energized electrical equipment.

For most homes, a 2-A:10-B:C rated extinguisher is the common entry point. A 3-A:40-B:C or larger unit is better for garages and workshops where flammable liquids are present. Always look for the UL Listed label to confirm the unit has been tested by a nationally recognized laboratory.1

Extinguishing Agents and How They Work

Dry chemical (ABC). The most common household agent. Uses monoammonium phosphate, a fine powder that smothers flames and interrupts the chemical chain reaction of combustion. Effective on A, B, and C fires. The trade-off is cleanup: the powder is corrosive and coats everything it touches. In a kitchen, it can damage appliances, electronics, and food preparation surfaces.

Dry chemical (BC). Uses sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate. Effective on B and C fires but not on Class A. Less residue than monoammonium phosphate. Some households keep a small BC unit near the stove specifically for grease fires, alongside an ABC unit for general use.

CO2 (carbon dioxide). Displaces oxygen and cools the fire. Leaves no residue at all, making it ideal for electronics, server rooms, and workshops where cleanup matters. Rated for B and C fires. Not effective on Class A fires because the gas disperses too quickly to prevent reignition of smoldering materials.

Water mist. A fine mist that cools the fire and reduces oxygen without the splash hazard of a traditional water stream. Safe for A and C fires (the mist is non-conductive). A newer option gaining traction in residential and hospital settings because it produces no chemical residue.

Wet chemical (Class K). Sprays a potassium-based solution that reacts with burning cooking oil to form a soapy foam layer (saponification) that seals the surface, cools the oil, and prevents reignition. The specialized chemistry is why NFPA 10 requires Class K units in commercial kitchens rather than relying on ABC dry chemical.2

When to Use an Extinguisher and When to Leave

A fire extinguisher is a tool for small, early-stage fires. The U.S. Fire Administration provides a clear checklist for deciding whether to attempt suppression. Use an extinguisher only when all of these conditions are true:1

You have already alerted everyone in the building and someone has called the fire department.

The fire is small and contained to a single object or surface, like a pan or a wastebasket.

You are safe from the fire's smoke and toxic gases.

You have a clear escape route behind you.

You are physically able to lift and operate the extinguisher.

If any one of those conditions is not met, leave the building immediately. The USFA is clear: young children and older adults should generally not use fire extinguishers.1

The PASS technique: Pull the pin. Aim low at the base of the fire. Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. Sweep the nozzle from side to side.1 Most home extinguishers discharge for 8 to 15 seconds. That is less time than most people expect. If the fire is not visibly diminishing within the first few seconds of discharge, stop, leave, and close the door behind you.

Where to Put Them

Placement That Actually Works

An extinguisher stored in a back closet behind luggage is technically present but practically useless. The USFA emphasizes that nothing should block or limit your ability to reach the extinguisher in an emergency.1

Kitchen: Mount it on the wall near the kitchen exit, not directly next to the stove. If the stove is what is on fire, you need to be able to reach the extinguisher without reaching over the flames.

Garage or workshop: Mount near the entry door, at waist to shoulder height. Garages with flammable liquids, paint, or power tools benefit from a larger unit (3-A:40-B:C or higher).

Main hallway or living area: One unit per floor, mounted near the top of the stairway or in a central hallway. This covers the most common fire path between sleeping areas and exits.

Wall-mount brackets are inexpensive and keep the extinguisher visible, accessible, and off the floor. Mounting height should place the handle at a height comfortable for the shortest adult in the household.

Keeping Them Ready

Inspection and Maintenance

NFPA 10 defines a four-tier maintenance schedule for portable fire extinguishers. For homeowners, the most important tier is the monthly visual check, which anyone can perform:2

Confirm the extinguisher is in its designated location and nothing is blocking access. Check that the pressure gauge needle is in the green zone. Verify the pull pin is in place and the tamper seal is intact. Look for any visible damage, corrosion, or dents on the cylinder. Confirm the operating instructions on the label are legible.

A good time to check is the same day you test your smoke alarms, which the NFPA recommends doing monthly.

Professional maintenance by a certified technician is recommended annually. This includes testing the operating mechanism, checking seals, and verifying the agent charge.2 Every 6 years, stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers should be emptied and internally examined. Every 12 years, the cylinder undergoes a hydrostatic pressure test to verify structural integrity.2

For standard 5-pound and 10-pound ABC home extinguishers, replacement is often more cost-effective than professional 6-year or 12-year servicing. The extinguisher itself typically costs less than the service call.
