The shelf

Books worth having close.

Not a catalog — a curated shelf of references we'd actually keep within reach, organized by what they help you do. Every title links two ways: buy a copy to keep, or find it at your local library.

How we choose

A short shelf, chosen carefully.

This isn't a catalog, and no one pays to be listed here. A book earns a place the same way every time: it has to be one we'd keep on our own shelf. In practice that comes down to four things.

  • Written by someone who knows the subject — real expertise or a durable, trusted reputation behind it.
  • Calm and practical — it fills a real need without the fear-mongering that fills this category.
  • Accurate and durable — still worth owning years from now, not just this season.
  • From an author we're comfortable standing beside — a recommendation endorses the person, not just the pages.

When a book is excellent but imperfect — an older edition, a narrower focus — we don't hide it. We tell you exactly what it's good for and where its limits are, right on its page. Every title here is one we recommend; a few come with a note on how to read them.

And we'd genuinely rather you borrowed it than bought something you won't use.

Buy it or borrow it

A prepared household owns some books. A prepared community supports its library.

Every book here links two ways: buy a copy to keep on your shelf, or find it at your local library first. A library that gets used is a library that stays funded.

A resilient town keeps knowledge within reach.
