Hazard Checklist
A step-by-step checklist for coastal households. Print it for your refrigerator or save it to your My Readiness dashboard.
100 ft
minimum safe elevation above sea level
20 sec
earthquake length that signals a natural warning
500 mph
tsunami speed in the deep ocean
3
natural warning signs to know
Phase 1
A tsunami generated close to shore can arrive faster than an official warning. Knowing your route to high ground ahead of time is the single most useful thing a coastal household can do.
Phase 2
If a tsunami is generated close to shore, there may not be time for an official warning. Natural signs are your warning, and moving quickly matters more than being certain.
Phase 3
A tsunami is a series of waves, not a single event. Staying away from the coast until officials confirm it is over matters as much as the first evacuation.
Gear
A few items do most of the work for a coastal household. These are the ones worth having before you ever need them.
