The basics
Chlorine dioxide water treatment drops use the same active ingredient as chlorine dioxide tablets. The chemistry is identical. The difference is in form: a two-part liquid kit rather than a pre-measured tablet. You mix Part A and Part B in a small cap, wait five minutes for the reaction to activate, then add the resulting solution to your water.
The liquid format has a practical advantage for households that store water in varying container sizes. A tablet is pre-dosed for one liter. Drops can be scaled to treat a half-liter water bottle, a 5-gallon container, or a bathtub bladder. One 2-ounce kit treats up to 60 gallons, making it significantly more economical per gallon than tablets. For home water storage, many preparedness-minded households keep drops specifically for treating stored containers.
The main tradeoff is the extra step. In the field at 2 a.m. when you need water quickly, counting out drops and waiting five minutes for the mixing reaction adds friction that a tablet does not. For home use, this matters less. Both formats belong in a complete water preparedness plan: drops for home storage and large-volume treatment, tablets for go-bags and vehicle kits where speed matters.
Aquamira is the dominant brand in this category. Their formula is EPA-registered (Reg. No. 71766-1) and has been used by outdoor recreationists and emergency preparedness households for decades. The active ingredient, chlorine dioxide, has been used by municipal water systems since the 1940s.

Drops vs. tablets for the go-bag: For a 72-hour bag or vehicle kit, chlorine dioxide tablets are a simpler choice. Drops require measuring and mixing, which adds complexity under stress. Keep drops at home for large-volume or stored water treatment, and carry tablets in any kit you might grab in a hurry.
Storage
Unopened Aquamira drops have a 4-year shelf life from the manufacture date. Store bottles in a cool, dark location with the two parts separated. Do not combine Part A and Part B into a single container for storage. The reaction only happens when you mix them in the field.
Part A is the more sensitive component. It contains sodium chlorite, which oxidizes if exposed to air or light. A degraded Part A will produce a weaker or non-yellow solution when mixed, which is your signal that the kit has lost effectiveness. If the mixed solution does not turn bright yellow within 5 minutes, the kit is spent.
Once opened, use within one year. Write the opening date on the bottle with a permanent marker. Do not store open bottles in a hot car or direct sunlight.
After mixing Part A and Part B, the solution should turn distinctly yellow within 5 minutes. Bright yellow means the reaction is proceeding correctly. If the solution stays clear or produces only a faint tint, the kit may be expired or degraded. Do not use questionable kits on your only water supply. Rotate and replace on schedule rather than relying on visual checks as your safety net.
Drops vs. tablets
Both formats use chlorine dioxide chemistry. The choice between them comes down to use case, not performance.

Safety & dosing
The mixing step is the most important and most commonly skipped part of using chlorine dioxide drops. The reaction between Part A and Part B must complete before the solution goes into the water. Adding unmixed or partially mixed drops to water produces a weaker, inconsistent treatment.
Mix 7 drops Part A + 7 drops Part B in the mixing cap.
Use the small mixing cap included with the kit. Do not mix directly in your water container.
Wait 5 minutes. The solution should turn bright yellow.
This is the chlorine dioxide reaction activating. If it does not turn yellow, the kit may be spent.
Add the activated solution to 1 liter of water. Stir or shake.
For larger containers, scale proportionally: 7+7 drops per liter. For a 5-gallon container, multiply by 4.75.
Wait before drinking.
30 minutes for bacteria, viruses, and Giardia. 4 hours for full Cryptosporidium coverage. If you cannot wait 4 hours and Crypto is a concern, pair with a mechanical filter that physically removes parasites.

Pre-filter turbid water before treating with drops. Particles in the water shield pathogens from the chlorine dioxide, reducing effectiveness. A clean bandanna, coffee filter, or improvised cloth filter removes the bulk of suspended particles. Let the water settle for 30 minutes if you cannot filter it, pour off the clear portion, and then treat.
Unlike iodine-based treatments, chlorine dioxide drops have no known contraindications for pregnancy, thyroid conditions, or general use. The trace amount of chlorine dioxide remaining in treated water after the contact time is within safe drinking limits per EPA and WHO guidance.
