Water ยท Water Storage Supplies
Fifty-year shelf life in sealed cans. The set-and-forget option for deep storage where rotation is impractical.
The basics
Canned emergency water is purified drinking water sealed in aluminum or steel cans and rated for shelf lives of 30 to 50 years depending on the brand. Water itself does not expire. What limits the life of stored water is the container it sits in. Sealed metal cans are among the most durable food-grade containers available, resistant to light, air, and biological contamination as long as the seal remains intact.
This makes canned water useful in a specific scenario: deep storage where regular rotation is impractical. A remote cabin, a buried cache, a storage unit you visit once a year, or a deep backup layer behind your primary home water supply. In those situations, the peace of mind of a 50-year shelf life has real value, even at a higher per-ounce cost.
For everyday household water storage, filling food-grade containers from the tap and rotating them every 6 to 12 months is far more cost-effective. A case of 24 cans holds roughly 288 ounces (about 2.25 gallons), enough for about two days of drinking water for one person. At $20 to $30 per case, the per-ounce cost is many times higher than tap water in a container. The value is in eliminating the rotation commitment, not in per-gallon economy.
12 to 24 cans per person is a reasonable deep-storage supplement. This is not intended as your only water supply. It is a layer of insurance behind your primary stored water. If rotation discipline is strong, you may not need canned water at all. If rotation is something you struggle to maintain, a case or two provides a reliable backup.
Any cool, dry location works. Canned water is extremely shelf-stable and tolerates a wide range of storage conditions. The primary failure modes are physical can damage (rust, denting, puncture) and extreme heat. Inspect cans periodically for damage. Once opened, use the water within 24 to 48 hours, the same as any opened container.
Blue Can, Datrex, and SOS are three commonly available brands. Blue Can rates their product at 50 years. Datrex and SOS are USCG-approved for marine life raft use. Generic canned water products exist at lower price points and work for the same purpose as long as the can is food-grade and properly sealed.
