The basics
A full 7-gallon water container weighs about 58 pounds. A full 55-gallon drum weighs over 450 pounds. Neither can be reasonably tilted to pour. A hand pump or siphon hose is how you get water out without moving the container — and for a 55-gallon drum, it is not optional equipment, it is part of the system.
For 7-gallon containers with spigots, a pump is less critical but still useful for transferring water into cooking pots, smaller bottles, or other containers without lifting. For anyone with drums, a hand pump that threads into the bung opening is the cleanest solution. For container-to-container transfer or topping off smaller vessels, a manual siphon hose works well and costs less.
Use food-grade hose only. Do not use a standard garden hose, automotive hose, or any hose not rated for potable water. Garden hoses are manufactured with plasticizers, heavy metals, and biocides that can leach into water — none of these have safe levels for drinking water. Any pump or siphon marketed for drinking water or homebrew use will be food-grade; most others will not be. Check the product description before buying.
Rinse and dry the pump or hose after every use. Store coiled in a clean, dry location. Before the first use with drinking water containers, flush with a dilute bleach solution (a few drops of unscented bleach in a gallon of water) and rinse thoroughly. Contamination from dirty storage is the primary failure mode — a clean pump kept in a clean location lasts indefinitely.
One hand pump or siphon hose per storage setup is the baseline. Keep it coiled and stored with your water containers so it is in hand when you need it. If you have both drums and smaller containers, a hand pump for the drum and a short siphon hose for the smaller vessels covers both use cases at minimal cost.
