The certification distinction that matters
NSF certification means an independent, accredited organization (NSF International, IAPMO, or WQA) has tested the product, audited the manufacturing facility, and verified the performance claims. The certification includes ongoing re-testing and inspections. Results are publicly verifiable in the certifier's database.
"Tested to NSF standards" means the manufacturer hired a private lab to run the same test protocols, but no accredited certifying body verified the results, inspected the facility, or will re-test on a schedule. The test may be legitimate. The oversight is not the same.
This distinction matters because every gravity filter brand uses language that sounds like certification but may not be. Read the fine print. Check the NSF, IAPMO, or WQA databases directly. If the product does not appear there, it is not certified regardless of what the marketing says.
The field, honestly
ProOne holds NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certification via IAPMO for its G2.0 ceramic-carbon elements. Berkey has published extensive third-party lab testing across 200+ contaminants, including PFAS removal data. The Phoenix filter elements carry NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certifications. Black Berkey elements are rated for 6,000 gallons per pair. However, Berkey has faced EPA regulatory action that restricts its sale in some states. Verify current availability and legal status in your state before purchasing.
Alexapure has been tested to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 standards by a private lab but does not hold formal NSF, IAPMO, or WQA certification. The claimed 5,000-gallon filter life includes fine print noting only 200 gallons verified under controlled lab conditions. The single-element design means slower flow rates than dual-element systems. It is a MyPatriotSupply brand.
British Berkefeld has manufactured ceramic gravity filters in England since 1827. Ultra Sterasyl ceramic elements carry NSF certification. The brand has never faced the regulatory issues that affected its American counterpart. Availability in the U.S. is more limited.
The cost-per-gallon math
Upfront price is not the real cost. Filter element life determines long-term expense. For a household filtering 3 gallons per day, approximate costs over 5 years:
ProOne G2.0 elements at 2,500 gallons per pair will need replacement roughly every 2.3 years. Two pairs of elements over 5 years plus the housing puts the total cost in the $400 to $500 range.

What to do right now
Check the certifier's database, not the brand's website. Search the NSF, IAPMO, or WQA product listings for the specific filter element model. If it appears there, the certification is real. If it does not, the marketing is ahead of the documentation.
Prioritize NSF/ANSI 53 over 42. Standard 42 covers taste and odor (chlorine). Standard 53 covers health effects (lead, VOCs, specific contaminants). If your concern is water safety during an emergency, Standard 53 is the one that matters.
Buy the filter before you need it. A gravity filter works without electricity, water pressure, or plumbing. It sits on a counter and filters water by gravity alone. During a boil-water advisory or a water outage, it is the simplest path to clean drinking water. But only if you already own it.
Test with your actual water source. Run your tap water through the filter and have the output tested by a state-certified lab. That is the only way to know what your specific filter removes from your specific water. Cost is typically $30 to $100 for a comprehensive panel.
