Does a Starlink Mini make sense as backup comms?

The Starlink Mini weighs under four pounds, draws 20 watts, costs $249, and delivers broadband internet from a dish the size of a laptop. The preparedness community has been asking the obvious question since it launched: is this the backup communications plan everyone has been waiting for?

What it actually does

The Starlink Mini is a portable satellite internet terminal with a built-in WiFi 6 router. Point it at the sky, plug in power, wait two to five minutes for satellite acquisition, and you have broadband internet. Real-world speeds run 50 to 150 Mbps in most locations. That is fast enough for video calls, messaging, email, news, and every communication tool that runs over the internet.

The power draw is the headline number for preparedness: 20 watts in active use, compared to 75 to 100 watts for the standard Starlink dish. A 100Ah lithium battery can run the Mini for over five hours. A 100-watt solar panel can sustain it indefinitely in direct sun. You can run it from a car's 12V outlet with an adapter.

During Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton, and the 2025 tornado outbreaks, Starlink terminals were among the first communications to come back online in areas where cell towers and landlines were destroyed. Satellite internet does not depend on local infrastructure. That is its core advantage.

What it does not do

The Starlink Mini is not an emergency communicator. It does not send an SOS signal. It does not work without external power. It does not fit in a pocket. It requires a clear view of the sky, which means dense tree canopy, steep terrain, and indoor placement will degrade or block the signal entirely.

For personal emergency signaling, a Garmin inReach Messenger weighs 4 ounces, has its own battery, fits on a belt loop, and sends an SOS to search and rescue coordinators within seconds from anywhere on Earth. It costs $300 and runs $15 a month. These are different tools for different problems.

The Starlink Mini is household internet that works when everything else fails. The Garmin inReach is a personal emergency beacon that works when you are alone and in trouble. A prepared household may eventually want both, but they are not interchangeable.

The cost question

The hardware is $249. The Mini Roam plan runs $50 per month for portable use. As an add-on to an existing Starlink Residential account, the additional cost is $30 per month. Plans can be paused and reactivated, which matters for a device that may sit on a shelf for months between uses.

The real cost question is whether $50 a month (or $30 as an add-on) for a backup internet connection you may never use is worth the peace of mind. For a household where both adults work remotely, where a child has medical needs that require telehealth access, or where the nearest hospital is 45 minutes away and cell coverage is unreliable, the answer may be yes. For a household in a metro area with strong cell coverage and multiple ISP options, the answer is probably not yet.

What to do right now

Decide which problem you are solving. If you need household internet when the ISP goes down, the Starlink Mini is the best option currently available. If you need personal emergency signaling, get a Garmin inReach or similar satellite communicator. If you need to stay in contact with family during a disaster, a pair of FRS radios at $30 works without any subscription at all.

Budget the power supply alongside the dish. The Mini is useless without external power. A portable power station in the 300 to 500 watt-hour range can run it for 15 to 25 hours. A 100-watt folding solar panel can sustain it indefinitely. Plan the power before you plan the internet.

Test your cell coverage gap before buying. If your cell phone reliably reaches family and emergency services during local outages, you may not need satellite internet at all. The Starlink Mini solves the problem of no internet and no cell. Make sure that is actually your problem.

Consider the family communication plan first. Before spending $249 on hardware, make sure your household has a written communication plan: who calls whom, where you meet, what happens if phones do not work. The plan is free and solves the most common communication failure in emergencies, which is not technology. It is that nobody discussed the plan ahead of time.
