Depression-era households foraged not from wilderness trails but from their own gardens, vacant lots, and roadsides. The USDA documented what grew there, how to identify it, and what it was worth eating.
In 1942, the USDA Bureau of Plant Industry published "Wild Greens for the Table," a guide to edible wild plants available across North America. The timing was wartime, but the knowledge it documented was Depression-era in origin. By 1942, millions of American households had already been supplementing their food supply with wild greens for a decade — not as an outdoor adventure but as a practical response to tight household budgets and abundant weeds.
The bulletin's framing was deliberately practical. It did not romanticize foraging or present wild plants as exotic or adventurous. It presented them as underutilized food crops growing in places most households already walked past: the garden, the back fence line, the vacant lot two doors down, the edges of the lawn. The question was not where to find these plants but whether households recognized them and knew how to use them.
The most important safety note, present in the bulletin and unchanged today: positive identification before consumption. The bulletin documented plants with straightforward identification and no dangerous lookalikes as the appropriate starting point for unfamiliar foragers. It was not a comprehensive wild plant guide — it was a practical table food guide for common, identifiable species.

Identification first, always
Some edible plants have toxic lookalikes. Positive identification using multiple features — leaf shape, stem, smell, habitat — is required before consuming any wild plant. Start with species documented here that have distinctive characteristics. Consult a regional field guide for your area. When uncertain, do not eat.
The Plants
The bulletin covered species that were both widely distributed across North America and straightforward to identify. These five were the most emphasized for kitchen garden foraging.
Dandelion
Taraxacum officinale
Spring-summer; all parts edible
The bulletin called dandelion "the most universally available of wild greens" and noted its nutritional profile was superior to most cultivated salad greens. Young leaves before flowering are mildest, usable raw or cooked. After flowering, cooking removes bitterness. Flowers are edible raw or used in wine and fritters. Roots, roasted and ground, were used as coffee substitute. The bulletin noted that households with lawns were effectively growing dandelion as an unconsidered crop.
Lamb's Quarters
Chenopodium album
Spring-fall; young leaves
One of the most nutritious wild greens in North America — same family as spinach and quinoa. Young leaves and growing tips are mild-flavored; cook exactly like spinach. Grows prolifically in disturbed soil, gardens, and garden edges. The bulletin documented it as one of the most practical garden weeds because it appears where soil has been turned, seeds heavily, and provides food from first warm days until frost.
Purslane
Portulaca oleracea
Summer; leaves and stems
Purslane was commonly cultivated as a vegetable in Europe and Asia but treated as a weed in American gardens. The bulletin documented it as one of the most nutritious of available garden weeds, with high omega-3 fatty acid content — a distinction that was not understood in 1942 but has since been confirmed by nutritional analysis. Succulent leaves and stems are edible raw (slightly mucilaginous, tangy) or cooked. Easy to identify: distinctive thick, succulent leaves on reddish stems with no lookalikes.
Wood Sorrel
Oxalis spp.
Spring-fall; leaves and flowers
Wood sorrel looks like clover but has heart-shaped leaflets and a distinctly tart, lemony flavor from oxalic acid. The bulletin documented it as a flavoring green — excellent in small quantities added to salads, soups, or cooked greens for sourness, but not a primary green for consumption in large amounts. Grows in lawns, gardens, and shaded areas. The bulletin noted its pleasant flavor was well-known to children who chewed the leaves, providing a teaching moment for adult use.
Plantain
Plantago major / P. lanceolata
Spring-summer; young leaves
Broadleaf and narrow-leaf plantain are among the most common lawn weeds in North America. Young spring leaves are edible cooked — texture similar to spinach, slightly bitter. The bulletin noted plantain's availability in compacted, disturbed soil including driveways, paths, and lawn edges where other plants don't grow. Leaves become fibrous and tough as the season progresses; the bulletin recommended harvesting only young spring growth.
What It Teaches
The 1942 bulletin's central insight was that food was growing in places households were treating as nuisances. Dandelions were being pulled from gardens. Lamb's quarters were being hoed from vegetable beds. Purslane was being raked off driveways. Each of these actions destroyed nutritious food while requiring labor — the inverse of what the bulletin proposed.
The shift in perspective was not radical: it was a change in how familiar things were categorized. The plants were the same. The labor of identifying and harvesting them was minimal. What changed was whether a household recognized them as resources or dismissed them as weeds.
From a preparedness standpoint, knowledge of edible wild plants in your immediate environment is a genuine local resource — one that doesn't deplete a stored supply and doesn't require purchasing. The most useful applications are not wilderness survival scenarios but ordinary circumstances: a spring dandelion green that extends a salad before the cultivated garden produces, a lamb's quarters crop that grows without any effort alongside vegetables, a purslane harvest from the cracks of a patio.
The safety discipline documented in the bulletin is non-negotiable. Start with species that are distinctive and have no dangerous lookalikes. Build identification skill incrementally. Use regional field guides specific to your actual location — not general guides that may not reflect what actually grows in your area. The bulletin's own list was selected specifically because these plants are difficult to misidentify — the authors understood that confident identification, not comprehensive coverage, was the goal for household-level foraging.
