Seed Saving as a Household Practice

Before commercial seed catalogs were universal, every gardening household saved seed. The USDA documented the practice systematically in 1936. The techniques are unchanged, and open-pollinated varieties are still widely available.

In 1936, the USDA Bureau of Plant Industry published Farmers' Bulletin No. 1770, "Saving Vegetable Seeds." The bulletin addressed a practice that had been universal for ten thousand years and was, by 1936, beginning to erode as commercial seed companies made it easier to buy new seed each year than to maintain household varieties. The Bureau's motivation was partly economic — saving seed reduced household gardening costs — and partly to document practices that were being lost as rural households moved to cities.

The bulletin's organizing principle was selection: seed saving was not simply collecting seeds from any plant. It was choosing the best-performing, most true-to-type plants from each variety each season, collecting seed from those specific individuals, and storing it properly. Done this way, a household variety improved over generations. Done carelessly — collecting seed from any convenient plant — the variety degraded.

The second key concept was open pollination. Seeds saved from open-pollinated (non-hybrid) varieties will produce plants true to the parent. Seeds saved from modern hybrid varieties will not — hybrids produce unpredictable offspring in the F2 generation. The 1936 bulletin preceded the widespread adoption of hybrid varieties; all varieties it discussed were open-pollinated. Today, saving seed for the purpose of seed security requires open-pollinated or heirloom varieties, which are widely available.

Saving by Crop Type

Not all seeds save the same way

The bulletin organized crops by pollination type and seed maturation, because these determine the technique. The categories are still the relevant ones.

Self-pollinating — easiest

Tomatoes, beans, peas, lettuce

These plants pollinate themselves before the flower fully opens. Cross-pollination between varieties is minimal. The bulletin recommended: select the best-performing plants, let fruits fully ripen (past the eating stage) on the plant, collect seed, ferment tomato seed briefly in water to remove germination inhibitors, dry thoroughly, store in paper envelopes in a cool dry location.

No isolation needed for most home gardens. Can save from multiple plants of the same variety.

Wind/insect pollinated — moderate

Corn, squash, cucumber, melon

These crops cross-pollinate readily between varieties. To save pure seed, the bulletin specified either spatial isolation (minimum 500-1000 feet between varieties of the same species) or temporal isolation (planting varieties to mature at different times). For most home gardens with limited space, growing only one variety of each species per season is the practical approach.

Corn requires the largest isolation distance — minimum 1000 feet for reliable purity. For small gardens, grow one variety per year.

Biennial — plan ahead

Carrots, beets, onions, parsley

These crops require two growing seasons to produce seed. In the first year, they produce the edible root or bulb. In the second year, they bolt and flower. The bulletin recommended selecting the best roots from harvest, overwintering them, replanting in spring, and collecting seed when the flower heads dry. In cold climates, root crops needed protection through winter before replanting.

This two-year cycle means planning a full season in advance to maintain continuous seed supply.

Storage

Making seed last

The bulletin documented that properly dried and stored seed retains high germination rates for 2-6 years depending on species. Improper storage — warm, humid, with light — destroys viability within months. The variables are temperature, humidity, and light, in that order of importance.

The bulletin's storage method: dry seed in paper envelopes or glass jars (with silica gel for long-term storage) in a cool, dark, dry location. A basement with stable temperatures outperforms a kitchen cabinet near the stove. For multi-year storage, sealed glass jars with a silica gel packet stored in a refrigerator dramatically extend viability — a method developed after the bulletin was written but consistent with its principles.

Label every packet: variety name, year saved, parent plant notes. Unlabeled seeds are nearly worthless within a few seasons.

What It Teaches

The independence that compounds

The 1936 bulletin's deepest lesson is about the difference between renting access to the food system and owning a small piece of it. A household that buys commercial seed each year is dependent on the seed catalog and the supply chain behind it. A household that saves seed from open-pollinated varieties holds something the supply chain cannot take away.

This is not a hypothetical concern. Commercial seed supply disruptions have occurred — during wartime, during pandemic logistics failures, during the consolidation of the seed industry that eliminated many traditional varieties from commercial catalogs. Households that held their own seed in those periods were not affected. Households that depended entirely on commercial supply were.

The practical entry point is simple: start with the easiest crops (tomatoes, beans, peas) and one variety of each. Let the best-performing individual plants go to seed rather than harvesting everything. Dry and store properly. Within one season, a household has a meaningful seed supply for the next year. Within a few seasons, it has multi-year reserves of the varieties that perform best in its specific soil and climate — locally adapted stock that no commercial catalog can replicate.
