Flood cleanup tools

A flooded home needs the right tools in the right order. Pump the water, strip the wet materials, then dry the structure. Getting the sequence wrong, or using the wrong equipment, turns a recoverable situation into a mold problem.

01 — THE RIGHT SEQUENCE

Pump, strip, dry

Flood cleanup follows a strict order. First, remove standing water with a submersible sump pump or wet-dry shop vacuum. A submersible pump moves 1,000 to 3,000 gallons per hour, far faster than bailing by hand.

Second, strip the wet materials. Remove waterlogged carpet, pad, and drywall to at least 12 inches above the visible water line. Water wicks upward through porous materials, so cutting at the water line risks sealing moisture behind new construction.

Third, dry the structure. Open windows, run fans and dehumidifiers, and keep air moving across exposed framing. The EPA says mold can begin growing on damp materials within 24 to 48 hours, so speed matters.

02 — THE ESSENTIAL TOOLKIT

What you need before the water arrives

A submersible utility pump is the single most important flood cleanup tool. Battery-powered or generator-powered models work when the grid is down. A wet-dry shop vacuum handles smaller volumes and corners the pump misses.

For stripping: a utility knife for carpet, a pry bar for baseboards and drywall, a flat shovel for scooping debris, and heavy-duty contractor trash bags. A reciprocating saw speeds drywall removal on larger jobs.

For drying: box fans, a dehumidifier rated for the square footage, and a moisture meter to verify framing is dry before closing walls. The target is below 15% moisture content in wood framing.

03 — SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Protect yourself first

The EPA recommends wearing an N-95 respirator, goggles without ventilation holes, and waterproof gloves at minimum during flood cleanup. Rubber boots with steel toes protect against submerged hazards.

Never operate electrical equipment while standing in water. Shut off power at the panel before entering a flooded space. If you cannot reach the panel without entering water, call your utility company.

Floodwater is contaminated. It carries sewage, chemicals, and bacteria. Any open wound that contacts floodwater warrants a tetanus check if your last booster was more than five years ago.

04 — COMMON MISTAKES

What makes things worse

Starting drywall removal before the water is pumped out wastes time and creates additional contamination spread. Pump first.

Cutting drywall at or below the water line instead of 12 inches above it. Moisture wicks upward through drywall and framing, and cutting too low traps hidden moisture.

Closing walls before framing is verified dry. A moisture meter reading above 15% means the wood is still too wet. Closing it in creates conditions for mold growth behind the new drywall.
