Where we get our information

Trusted Resources

The outside sites we have read ourselves and would send you to. Not a directory. A short, annotated list per domain, with the reasons written down.

How we choose

Read first, list second.

A site is listed only after someone here has read at least three of its pages on the day it is written up. We record who publishes it, when it was last updated, how it makes its money, whether other authorities cite it, and whether its safety numbers match the primary sources we work from: CDC, EPA, USDA, FDA, NFPA, Ready.gov, and the land-grant extension system.

Three things end a candidacy on the spot. Fear as the business model. Content that exists to carry affiliate links. A safety number on a sampled page that is less conservative than the primary source. Several good programs have missed the list on that last point; we tell them what we found, and a corrected page earns a second read.

Each domain page holds fifteen to thirty entries at most. Past that it is a directory, and the web has enough of those. New World Survival has no affiliate or sponsorship relationship with anyone listed. Where an organization sells something or serves an industry, its entry says so.

A note for the sites on these pages.

If your site is listed, we have read it and we mean the endorsement. We re-read every entry about once a quarter and retire the ones that go stale or change hands. If you see something we got wrong, the contact page is the fastest route to a correction.
