For larger rooms or open floor plans, the Levoit Core 400S covers 403 square feet and adds a reliable auto mode that responds to AQI changes. About $30 more.
If noise is a priority and the room is large, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ is the quietest of the three, covers 540 square feet, and runs well on medium speed continuously. Annual filter cost is higher at $60 to $80.

02 · The problem
Most air quality coverage focuses on PM2.5, the fine particulate matter that makes wildfire smoke visible and hazardous. A True HEPA filter captures PM2.5 at 99.97% efficiency. That part of the problem is well-understood and well-solved.
The part that matters just as much: wildfire smoke also carries volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and gases from burning vegetation, homes, vehicles, and materials. HEPA filters do not capture gases. VOCs pass straight through them. This is why an air purifier for wildfire smoke must pair True HEPA with an activated carbon layer. The HEPA handles particles. The carbon handles gases and odor compounds. Both are required.
Every unit in this review includes both. Any unit that does not include an activated carbon filter should not be used as a wildfire smoke purifier, regardless of its HEPA rating.
True HEPA vs. HEPA-type
Only units certified as True HEPA capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. Units labeled "HEPA-type," "HEPA-style," or "HEPA-like" carry no standardized performance guarantee and are not appropriate for smoke filtration. 03 · Our criteria
Most air purifier reviews sort by price. We sort by whether the unit performs during a week of bad AQI.
Clean Air Delivery Rate for smoke specifically, from AHAM certification data. Not dust CADR, not manufacturer estimates.
Weight and thickness of the carbon layer. Thin carbon loads faster during heavy smoke. We note which units have meaningfully thicker carbon.
Manufacturer ratings assume 2 air changes per hour. Heavy smoke calls for 5 ACH, cutting effective coverage roughly in half. We give both figures.
Ongoing cost under normal use, and the realistic cost during a heavy smoke season when filters load faster and replacement intervals shorten.
Filters sold only through the manufacturer create a supply chain vulnerability. During fire season, Amazon and hardware stores may sell out. We note which filters are widely stocked.
You will run this unit continuously for days. Noise at medium fan speed matters more than the top-speed specification that appears in most reviews.
A unit that increases fan speed when particles rise is genuinely useful during AQI spikes. We note whether the built-in air quality sensor is well-regarded or merely decorative.
Running an air purifier from a portable power station during an outage is a realistic wildfire scenario. We note wattage at medium and high so you can calculate runtime against your battery capacity.

Why it works
The Coway Mighty has a real track record in wildfire-affected households. Air quality researchers at the University of Montana and independent woodsmoke testing groups have validated its PM2.5 performance in field conditions, not just lab conditions. The particle sensor and fan-speed indicator are reliable enough that households use them as a practical AQI signal.
Replacement filters are widely available. During the 2020 and 2021 California fire seasons, Coway filters stayed in stock at Amazon and hardware stores longer than most competitors. At 77 watts on high, it runs roughly 6 hours on a 500Wh portable power station.
The catch
The activated carbon layer in the Mighty is thinner than dedicated smoke purifiers. During sustained high-AQI events, the carbon loads faster than the HEPA, and VOC capture degrades while the filter indicator still reads green. In a bad fire season, plan to replace the filter every 3 to 4 months rather than annually.
The unit is audible at high speed. Medium speed is livable for sleeping; high is not.

Why it works
The 400S covers more area than the Coway at a comparable price. The auto mode responds to actual air quality readings rather than a fixed schedule, which is genuinely useful when smoke conditions change by the hour. The app is optional for most functions, so it operates normally without an internet connection.
The activated carbon layer is moderately thicker than the Coway's, which extends its effective life during heavy smoke events. Power draw is notably lower at medium and high speeds, making it a better candidate for extended portable-power-station use. Running it at medium from a 500Wh station gives roughly 38 hours of runtime.
The catch
The 400S is slightly louder than the Coway at comparable fan settings. The app-linked auto mode, while convenient, requires the Vesync app setup during normal conditions. A household that buys this during an active smoke event and attempts to configure app-linked features without reliable internet may find it frustrating.

Why it works
The quietest unit on this list by a clear margin. Blueair's HEPASilent technology combines electrostatic and mechanical filtration, which delivers high CADR at lower fan speeds. For large open-plan living areas or households where noise tolerance is low, it is the right choice. The unit runs comfortably on medium without generating the white-noise hum of the Coway on high.
The fabric pre-filter is washable, which reduces some ongoing cost. Controls are simple: three speeds and an indicator light.
The catch
Annual filter cost is the highest on this list. Blueair replacement filters run $60 to $80 per year under normal conditions and more during heavy smoke seasons. HEPASilent uses a mild electrostatic charge, which generates a trace amount of ozone. The amount is well within EPA safe limits, but households with severe respiratory sensitivities may want to note it.

07 · What we chose not to test
These appear frequently on "best air purifier" lists. Here is why they are not on ours.
Winix 5500-2
A well-built unit with a comparable smoke CADR to the Coway, but its PlasmaWave technology generates ozone that many users disable permanently. No meaningful performance advantage over the Coway or Levoit for smoke specifically, and the ozone consideration adds complexity without benefit.
Honeywell HPA300
A longtime bestseller, but its activated carbon layer is the thinnest of any unit at this price point. For wildfire smoke specifically, that matters. The unit is also large and loud relative to its performance. Better options exist at the same price.
Dyson Purifier Cool (any model)
Genuinely strong filtration, a good air quality sensor, and the quietest operation of any unit in its class. At $500 to $700, a meaningful portion of the cost pays for the bladeless fan design, not filtration performance. The Coway or Levoit delivers comparable smoke filtration at roughly one-fifth the price. If the Dyson is already in the household, it is a good unit. As a first purchase for smoke preparedness, it is not the right call.
"HEPA-type" budget units under $40
Not True HEPA. Will not capture PM2.5 at the necessary efficiency for smoke filtration. Do not use for wildfire smoke at any price.
