Storing it safely
A spill-proof can that sits full of stale gasoline in the wrong spot solves the wrong problem. Three habits that matter more than which can you buy.
Untreated gasoline starts breaking down within 3-6 months. A fuel stabilizer added at fill time extends that to roughly 12-24 months. Mark the can with the fill date and the stabilizer expiration so rotation is a glance, not a guess.
Keep filled cans in a detached garage or outdoor shed, away from water heaters, furnaces, or anything with a pilot light. Out of direct sun. Check your local fire code — most jurisdictions cap how much gasoline a household can store at once.
Don't let stored fuel become a one-way purchase. Pour it into the vehicle before the stabilizer window closes, then refill the can. This keeps the fuel fresh and turns "emergency gas" into a habit instead of a forgotten hazard in the garage.
