Best all-in-one — fastest, broadest coverage, simplest use
The GRAYL GeoPress is the most complete portable purifier available and the right choice for most households that need virus protection. It uses electroadsorption technology: as water is pressed through the purifier media, pathogens are permanently bound to the media rather than physically blocked. The result is virus, bacteria, and protozoa removal in a single 8-second press — no wait time, no batteries, no chemicals, no turbidity limitation.
The activated carbon layer adds chemical, pesticide, PFAS, and heavy metal reduction beyond pathogen removal — a broader contaminant profile than any other portable purifier at this price. Fill the outer bottle from any suspect source, press the inner bottle down firmly on the ground or a stable surface, and drink directly from the purifier cap. Purifier cartridges are rated for 65 gallons (250 liters) and available as replacements.
The tradeoff is cost per liter. At roughly $100 for the bottle and $30–$35 per replacement cartridge, the GeoPress is more expensive per liter than gravity or squeeze filters. For travel, emergencies, and any situation where virus protection matters, the per-liter cost premium is justified by the coverage breadth and zero setup.

Lightest virus option — clear water only
UV light neutralizes viruses, bacteria, and protozoa in approximately 90 seconds per liter. Lightest option at ~5 oz. Rechargeable. Critical limitation: significantly less effective in turbid water. Particles block UV light before it reaches pathogens. For clear wilderness water sources or tap water, UV is effective and economical at ~$0.02 per liter. Pre-filter turbid sources through a bandana before using UV.

Cheapest per liter — pairs with any filter
The most economical virus coverage option and the best companion to a standard hollow fiber filter. Filter first to remove particulates, then treat with ClO2 for 15 minutes (bacteria/viruses) to 4 hours (Cryptosporidium). Adds no weight beyond the small tablet packet. No batteries, no mechanical parts, no parts to break. The standard recommendation for adding virus coverage to any existing filter setup without buying a new system.
The critical safety point
A “water purifier” is specifically required to achieve EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers, which includes virus removal. If a product is labeled a “microfilter” or “water filter,” it has not been rated for virus removal. Look for “purifier” in the product name, an NSF P231 or EPA virus removal rating, or a statement of 99.99% virus removal in the product specifications.

Generic gravity filters and squeeze filters on Amazon frequently include vague claims about “removing 99.9% of pathogens” without specifying which pathogens or citing any certification. At 0.1–0.2 micron pore size, hollow fiber physically cannot block viruses — claims to the contrary in product descriptions are misleading.
When virus protection matters, use only products with documented virus removal: GRAYL purifiers, MSR Guardian, UV purifiers, or chemical treatment. If the product does not specifically state virus removal in its verified specifications, treat it as a filter only.
