01 — The low-maintenance chicken myth
The myth
Chickens are low-maintenance animals that largely take care of themselves.
Chickens are the easiest livestock to keep, but they still require daily care and close attention
Relative to goats, dairy cattle, or pigs, chickens are indeed lower-maintenance. They do not require milking, herd management, or complex social structure navigation. But "lower than some livestock" and "low-maintenance" describe different things, and the distinction matters to anyone planning their daily schedule around the assumption that chickens require minimal attention.
The actual daily requirements are: fresh water (waterers foul quickly, especially in warm weather, and must be cleaned and refilled); fresh feed; and egg collection. Eggs left in the nest boxes beyond one day attract predators to the coop, encourage broodiness in hens that then stop laying, and in warm weather begin to develop. The coop needs to be closed every evening before dark or predators will enter, and opened every morning so birds can access outdoor areas. Bedding needs to be refreshed on a schedule that prevents ammonia buildup. The flock needs to be observed at least briefly on a daily basis, because a hen in distress, an injury from a flock mate, or a sick bird can deteriorate rapidly when unnoticed. None of these tasks is particularly demanding individually. Together they constitute a daily commitment that needs to be accounted for in planning, not discovered after the birds arrive.
- Chickens require daily water, feed, and egg collection without exception. Skipping any of these for even one day produces health, welfare, or predator consequences.
- The coop must be closed every evening and opened every morning. Predators are consistent; an open coop at night is a reliable loss.
- Brief daily observation catches health problems early. A hen behaving differently from the flock (sitting apart, not eating, fluffed feathers) is the first visible sign of many serious conditions.
02 — The goats-eat-anything myth
The myth
Goats eat literally anything they can reach, including tin cans.

The image of a goat eating a tin can is one of the most durable pieces of livestock folklore, and it reflects a real observation misunderstood: goats were mouthing the paper labels on cans, which were often pasted on with starchy adhesive and found interesting. They were not eating the metal. In reality, goats are notably selective feeders. They are browsers rather than grazers, preferring woody shrubs, brush, leaves, and weeds over grass, and they will consistently refuse food that has been walked on, dropped on the ground, or contaminated in any way they can detect. A goat that has tipped over its hay feeder will often go hungry rather than eat hay that is now on the ground.
This selectivity has practical implications. Hay should be fed from elevated feeders that keep it off the ground; wastage from dropped hay is one of the largest controllable feed costs in small-scale goat keeping. Many plants common in suburban and rural landscapes are toxic to goats: azaleas, rhododendrons, cherry and peach leaves, yew, and nightshade are among the most commonly encountered. Goats will explore and mouth unfamiliar vegetation before consuming it, and they are reasonably good at self-regulation with most plants, but they cannot be relied on to always avoid toxic species. A new pasture or browse area should be surveyed for toxic plants before goats are introduced.

03 — The rooster-for-eggs myth
The myth
Hens cannot lay eggs without a rooster present.

This is among the most common misconceptions about chicken keeping, and it matters because many urban and suburban ordinances allow hens but prohibit roosters (due to noise). A keeper who believes hens need a rooster may either forgo keeping chickens unnecessarily or acquire a rooster illegally and create friction with neighbors and local authorities.
Egg laying in hens is a hormonal cycle driven by light, not by the presence or absence of a rooster. A hen's reproductive system produces an egg approximately every 24 to 26 hours under favorable conditions regardless of fertilization. The eggs sold in grocery stores are laid by hens in facilities with no roosters and are uniformly unfertilized. A rooster is needed only when the keeper wants fertile eggs for hatching, either to expand the flock naturally or to hatch eggs in an incubator. For a household that wants eggs for eating, no rooster is needed or beneficial. The rooster's other roles, such as flock protection behavior and alarm calls, are real but not necessary for egg production.

04 — The rabbit pellet-only myth
The myth
Rabbits can thrive on pelleted feed alone; pellets are a complete diet.

This myth causes more rabbit deaths and veterinary visits than any other feeding misconception. Rabbit physiology is built around continuous high-fiber intake: the digestive system must keep moving constantly, driven by the mechanical action of grass hay passing through. When fiber intake drops, gut motility slows. GI stasis (the gut stopping or nearly stopping) is extremely painful, produces no feces, and can be fatal within 24 to 48 hours. It is also one of the most common reasons rabbits present to veterinarians. Pellets are concentrated, low in long-strand fiber, and highly palatable; a rabbit given free-choice pellets will eat them in preference to hay and consume insufficient fiber as a result.
The second consequence is dental. Rabbit teeth grow continuously throughout their lives and require constant abrasive wear to maintain correct alignment. Hay chewing provides that wear. Without it, teeth overgrow and eventually prevent the rabbit from closing its mouth normally or eating effectively. Dental disease in rabbits requires veterinary intervention and recurring management. The third consequence of pellet-only feeding is obesity: pellets are calorically dense, and sedentary house rabbits that eat freely from a pellet bowl without hay to fill on tend to become overweight, which causes additional health complications. University extension rabbit programs and house rabbit society guidelines are consistent: hay is the foundation, pellets are the supplement.
- Hay must be available to rabbits at all times and form the majority of their diet. Long-strand fiber drives gut motility and provides dental wear. Timothy or orchard grass hay for adults.
- Pellets are a supplement, not a replacement. Free-choice pellets allow rabbits to fill on low-fiber, high-calorie food and eat less hay, which causes GI stasis and dental disease.
- GI stasis is a medical emergency. A rabbit that stops eating, stops producing feces, or appears hunched and uncomfortable needs veterinary attention promptly.
- Dental disease from inadequate chewing wear requires veterinary intervention. Prevention through adequate hay is far less expensive than repeated dental procedures.
