Water storage in small spaces

01 — The starting point

Where apartment water storage begins

The CDC recommends storing at least one gallon of water per person per day, with a goal of two weeks' supply. For someone in a studio apartment, two weeks at one gallon per day is 14 gallons, roughly the volume of a medium dog crate. That is manageable in almost any living situation.

The practical starting point for apartment dwellers is stackable 3- to 5-gallon containers made from food-grade HDPE plastic, marked with recycling symbol number 2. These sit in closets, under beds, in pantry corners, or alongside a bookshelf without requiring any floor plan sacrifice that a 55-gallon barrel would demand. Eight five-gallon containers hold 40 gallons and occupy about eight square feet of floor space.

The containers that do not work: milk jugs, juice bottles, and cardboard cartons. Milk protein and fruit sugars cannot be fully removed from those surfaces even with thorough washing. Residue supports bacterial growth in stored water. The CDC's water storage guidance specifically identifies food-grade containers as the requirement and warns against reusing containers that previously held anything toxic, including bleach or pesticides.

02 — Purpose-built containers

What purpose-built water storage containers offer that standard jugs do not

Standard one-gallon water jugs from the grocery store are FDA-approved food-grade containers and they work, but they are not designed for long-term storage under pressure. The walls are thin, the caps are not designed to maintain a long-duration seal, and they are awkward to stack. They also must be rotated on the same six-month schedule as any tap-filled container.

Purpose-built containers, such as stackable Water Brick-style containers or 5- to 7-gallon containers with spigots, solve several of these problems. They are made from thicker food-grade HDPE, designed with interlock features for stable stacking, and sized so that a full container is still manageable by one person. A 5-gallon container weighs about 41.7 pounds, which is heavy but liftable. A 7-gallon container at 58 pounds is at the upper limit of comfortable single-person handling.

The more important advantage of purpose-built containers is their consistent geometry. Stackable storage systems keep water off the floor, organized, and accessible without requiring the containers to be relocated for access. That matters in a small apartment where reaching stored water during an emergency should not require moving furniture.

Standard grocery jugs

Food-grade, inexpensive, immediately available. Thin walls, poor stacking, must rotate every 6 months. Fine for short-term backup supply.

Purpose-built containers

Thicker walls, stackable geometry, designed for long-term storage. More expensive upfront. Better for a permanent apartment supply that you rotate twice a year.

03 — The bathtub option

Bathtub bladders: what they do, what they require, and their one real limitation

A bathtub bladder, the best known being the WaterBOB, is a heavy-duty food-grade plastic liner that unfolds into a standard bathtub and fills from the faucet. It holds up to 100 gallons, meets USFDA food-grade guidelines, is BPA-free, and keeps water safe for up to 16 weeks according to the manufacturer. It deploys in 15 to 20 minutes and costs approximately $35.

At the CDC's baseline of one gallon per person per day, 100 gallons covers a family of four for 25 days. As a supplemental emergency measure with advance warning, it is among the most space-efficient options available for apartment residents. When unused, it folds flat into a small box that fits in a kitchen drawer or on a shelf.

The genuine limitation is lead time. A bathtub bladder requires 15 to 20 minutes of notice to deploy. It is well suited for predictable emergencies with warning, such as approaching hurricanes, incoming ice storms, or pre-announced utility shutoffs. It is not useful for sudden events like earthquakes or immediate power failures. This is why it functions best as a supplement to stored water rather than a replacement for it. A household with seven gallons in stackable containers plus a bathtub bladder on standby has both immediate access and surge capacity.

04 — The freezer reserve

Water containers in the freezer serve two purposes at once

Filling plastic bottles or quart-sized containers with water and placing them in unused freezer space solves two problems simultaneously. The water is stored and accessible after thawing, and the frozen mass extends the freezer's cold-holding time during a power outage.

The FDA's power outage guidance recommends freezing containers of water specifically to help maintain food temperature when power is interrupted. The USDA's emergency food safety guidance echoes this: a full freezer holds a safe temperature for approximately 48 hours after power loss, compared to 24 hours for a half-full freezer. Filling unused space with frozen water effectively makes the freezer fuller at no cost beyond the water itself.

One precaution: water expands when it freezes. Do not fill bottles completely to the top before freezing. Leave at least an inch of headspace or use containers with some flex. Standard plastic water bottles, quart-sized freezer bags laid flat, or purpose-made freezer containers all work. As the water thaws during an outage, it becomes drinking water at the same time it has been serving as a cold source for food.
