Short circuits start fires
Loose batteries stored with metal objects (keys, coins, paper clips) can short-circuit when the metal bridges the positive and negative terminals. The battery rapidly discharges its energy as heat, which can ignite nearby materials. CPSC has documented fires caused by 9-volt batteries in drawers.
Original packaging or tape
CPSC recommends keeping batteries in their original packaging until use, or covering the terminals with electrical tape. Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze modern alkaline batteries; condensation when warming can cause corrosion.
9-volt batteries are the highest risk because both terminals are on the same end, making accidental bridging easy. Always tape 9-volt terminals or store them individually in small bags.
Do not throw lithium batteries in the trash
Alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D) can go in household trash in most jurisdictions. Lithium and rechargeable batteries must be recycled through designated collection points (hardware stores, electronics stores, municipal recycling). Lithium batteries in landfills can cause fires.
- Cover terminals with tape or keep in original packaging
