01 — Scalding prevention
Hot tap water causes thousands of scalding burns each year. Setting the water heater to 120°F eliminates most of the risk.
Many water heaters ship from the factory set at 140°F or higher. This temperature is sufficient to scald a child or an older adult in seconds. Lowering the setting to 120°F provides hot water for bathing, washing, and dishwashing while dramatically reducing the scald risk. Consult your water heater's manual for how to adjust the thermostat — on most units it is a dial behind an access panel.
- Always test bath water with your wrist or elbow before a child enters — these areas are more sensitive than your hand.
- Fill the tub before putting a child in, and check the temperature before they get in.
- Install anti-scald devices on showerheads and faucets as an additional layer of protection.
- Older adults, people with diabetes, and those with reduced nerve sensitivity may not feel dangerously hot water in time — the 120°F setting matters most for these households.
02 — Child burn prevention at the stove
Turning pot handles inward is one of the simplest, most effective burn prevention habits for households with children.
Children are injured by stovetop burns when they reach up and grab or knock a pot or pan with its handle extending over the edge of the stove. A pot handle extending outward from a front burner is at roughly the same height as a child's outstretched arm. A single habit eliminates most of this risk: always turn handles toward the back of the stove or at an angle where they cannot be grabbed from the floor level, and cannot be caught by an adult passing by.
- Use back burners whenever possible when children are present in the kitchen.
- Never hold a child while cooking at the stove — a stumble, spill, or sudden movement creates burn and scalding risk for both of you.
- Establish a kitchen safety zone — a 3-foot buffer around cooking areas where young children do not enter while cooking is active.
- Keep handles of pots and pans away from oven edges and stove controls that children might reach.
- Supervise older children learning to cook; establish clear expectations about safe behavior around hot surfaces and appliances.
03 — Electrical fire warning signs
Electrical fires often announce themselves before they ignite. Ignoring these warning signs is how they become fatal.
Electrical fires cause approximately 51,000 home fires each year in the United States, resulting in nearly 500 deaths and over 1,400 injuries. Most of those fires began with warning signs that were present and ignored: warm outlets, flickering lights, frequent breaker trips. These are not minor inconveniences — they are symptoms of overloaded circuits, failing wiring, or defective devices.
Warm or hot outlet or switch plate
An outlet or switch plate that is warm or hot to the touch indicates excessive heat in the wiring behind it. Stop using it and call an electrician.
Flickering or dimming lights
Lights that flicker, dim when appliances run, or flicker only at one fixture may indicate loose wiring connections or overloaded circuits.
Frequently tripping circuit breakers
A breaker that trips repeatedly on the same circuit is protecting you from an overloaded or faulted circuit. The right response is to reduce load or call an electrician — not to replace the breaker with a higher-rated one.
Burning smell or discoloration at outlets
A burning or plastic odor, or discoloration or scorch marks around an outlet or switch, indicates heat damage. Stop using the outlet immediately and call an electrician.
Sparking when plugging in
Small sparks when plugging in a device can be normal, but large or persistent sparking, or sparking at outlets that previously did not do this, indicates a wiring problem.
Frayed or damaged cords
A cord with damaged insulation is a fire and shock hazard. Replace the cord or the appliance — tape is not an adequate repair for damaged electrical insulation.
Do not use extension cords as permanent wiring. Extension cords are rated for temporary use and can overheat when used continuously for high-draw appliances like space heaters, refrigerators, or air conditioners. If you rely on extension cords for permanent appliance connections, the correct solution is additional outlets, not heavier extension cords.
04 — Dryer lint fire prevention
Dryer fires are among the most preventable home fires. The cause in nearly every case is lint accumulation — in the trap, in the duct, or in the dryer cavity itself.
The NFPA reports approximately 13,820 home fires per year are caused by dryers. The leading factor in these fires is failure to clean the lint trap and exhaust duct. Lint is highly flammable — it is essentially tinder. A dryer that pushes hot exhaust through a lint-clogged duct is operating under conditions designed to start a fire.
- Never run the dryer when you are asleep or away from home. Most dryer fires start in unattended machines.
- Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct rather than flexible plastic or foil accordion duct — plastic and thin foil ducts crush more easily, accumulate lint at folds, and can burn through if a lint fire starts.
- Keep the area around the dryer clear of lint, clothing, and other flammables.
- If the dryer takes multiple cycles to dry a load, the exhaust duct is likely partially blocked — this is a fire warning, not just a performance issue.
