Rotational kickback, the upward and backward reaction from bar-tip contact, is the more forceful and dangerous of the two mechanisms, but pinch kickback, where the wood closes on the chain during a cut and traps it, can also throw the saw with real force. Both are worth understanding, since the corrective habits for avoiding each are slightly different.

03 — The gear that actually stops a cut

When the moving chain contacts them, the fibers do not simply resist being cut. They pull free and get drawn into the chain's drive sprocket and clutch, jamming the mechanism and stopping the chain within a single rotation.

Standing to the side of the saw's cutting line, not directly behind it, keeps the operator's body out of the path the saw travels during a kickback event.
Most modern chainsaws include an inertial chain brake designed to engage automatically if the saw is thrown back at sufficient speed, functioning as a backup to good technique rather than a replacement for it. Confirming the chain brake engages properly before starting any job, and engaging it manually whenever walking with a running saw or crossing uneven ground, closes a gap that technique alone does not fully cover.
A well-maintained chain also lowers kickback risk. A dull or improperly sharpened chain requires more force to cut and is more prone to grabbing or binding in the wood, both of which increase the chance of a pinch or a moment of lost control that a sharp, correctly tensioned chain would have avoided.
