01 — What chemical treatment does
Bleach and iodine kill bacteria and viruses. Protozoa are a different problem.
Household bleach and iodine tablets are widely available, lightweight, and effective against many pathogens. The CDC confirms that chlorine and iodine, given adequate concentration and contact time, kill bacteria and viruses reliably. They are practical backups when boiling is not possible.
The critical limitation is protozoa. The CDC Yellow Book states directly that Cryptosporidium "is poorly inactivated by chlorine- or iodine-based disinfection at practical concentrations, even with extended contact times." This is not a minor gap. Cryptosporidium is a significant cause of waterborne illness outbreaks in the United States and is found in surface water, agricultural runoff, and water sources contaminated by animal waste.
Giardia falls between these two poles. It is more resistant to chlorine and iodine than bacteria and viruses, but field-level concentrations with longer contact times are usually effective against it. The CDC notes this requires extended exposure compared to standard bacterial treatment.

Most portable gravity filters remove protozoa and bacteria but not viruses. Boiling is the only single-step method that reliably kills all three pathogen categories.
02 — Chemical contamination
Boiling and bleach do not make chemically contaminated water safe
The EPA states plainly: "boiling or disinfection will not destroy other contaminants, such as heavy metals, salts, and most other chemicals." This is one of the most important and most misunderstood limits of emergency water treatment. Chemical disinfection addresses biological threats. It does nothing for pesticides, fuel, industrial runoff, heavy metals like lead or arsenic, or PFAS compounds.
Important limitation
If water may be contaminated by flood water from an industrial or agricultural area, fuel spills, or known chemical hazards, boiling and bleach treatment are not sufficient. Use sealed commercial bottled water, or follow specific guidance from your local health department. Do not treat chemically contaminated water and assume it is safe to drink.
Boiling can actually concentrate some chemical contaminants. As water evaporates during boiling, dissolved substances remain behind at a higher concentration per volume of remaining water. For biologically contaminated water from a reliable source like a municipal system under a temporary boil advisory, this is not a concern. For water drawn from a flood, an unknown surface source, or an area with known industrial contamination, it is.
The practical guidance is straightforward: use boiling and chemical treatment for biological threats from known-clean sources. When chemical contamination is possible, sealed bottled water is the only safe option until authorities confirm the source is clear.
03 — Iodine limitations
Iodine has specific medical contraindications
Iodine tablets are compact and effective against bacteria, viruses, and Giardia with adequate contact time. They are a reasonable short-term field option. The CDC identifies three groups who should not use iodine for water purification: pregnant women, people with thyroid conditions, and people with a known hypersensitivity to iodine.
The reason is physiological. Iodine is absorbed through the gut and enters the bloodstream. In pregnancy, excess iodine can affect fetal thyroid development. In people with existing thyroid disease, particularly hyperthyroidism or certain autoimmune conditions, additional iodine can disrupt thyroid function. Hypersensitivity reactions range from mild to severe.
Even for people without these conditions, the CDC advises against using iodine-treated water for more than a few weeks at a time. This makes iodine a short-term emergency tool rather than a rotation staple. Chlorine bleach does not carry the same thyroid or pregnancy contraindications at the concentrations used for water treatment, which makes it the better default chemical option for most households.
04 — Treatment redundancy
Having two methods is a design principle, not overcaution
Emergency preparedness planners recommend keeping at least two water treatment methods on hand. The reason is practical, not paranoid. No single method covers every scenario. Boiling requires fuel and a heat source. Chemical treatment fails against Cryptosporidium. Gravity filters miss viruses. If any single method becomes unavailable or the water source changes, a backup method determines whether you can treat water at all.
The most common recommended pairing is boiling as the primary method and bleach as a backup for when fuel is unavailable. A gravity filter with a pore size of 0.1 to 0.3 microns adds protozoa coverage without requiring fuel or chemicals, and pairs well with either boiling or chemical treatment to address viruses and bacteria respectively.
The EPA's emergency disinfection guidance lists boiling, chemical disinfection, and filtration as distinct tools with different applications. A household that has only one method has no fallback if that method fails or is inappropriate for the water source they need to treat. Two methods that cover different pathogen categories provide meaningful resilience that a single method cannot.
