01 — Sewing on a button so it actually stays
The technique that holds is passing the needle through the fabric and button alternately several times, then deliberately winding the remaining thread around the shank, the small thread bridge between button and fabric, before tying off. Skip that shank-winding step and the button sits flat against the fabric with no room for the buttonhole to slide under it cleanly.
Use thread that genuinely matches the garment's weight, not just its color; a thin thread on a heavy coat button will simply snap under the first real strain. Anchor the thread with a small knot, then work from behind the fabric, up through one buttonhole, across to the opposite hole, and back down through the fabric, repeating this pass 4 to 6 times for real holding strength.
- Before tying off, wind the working thread several times around the threads between the button and the fabric, creating that raised shank. 02 — A fabric patch that genuinely outlasts the garment

Match the patch fabric's weight to the garment's original fabric where reasonably possible; a heavy denim patch sewn onto a light cotton shirt creates an uneven stress point that the surrounding lighter fabric is likely to tear around eventually, simply because the patch itself doesn't flex the same way the rest of the garment does.

03 — A fallen hem: the stitch that disappears from the outside
A slip stitch (sometimes called a blind hem stitch) catches only a thread or two of the outer fabric on each pass, which is exactly why it's nearly invisible from the outside even though it's holding the hem fold firmly in place from the inside.
Most fallen hems still show a visible crease line where the original fold was, which makes refolding straightforward: press the fabric back along that existing line and pin it in place every few inches before sewing, rather than guessing at a new fold height.
- Work the slip stitch by alternating tiny bites: a small catch of the outer garment fabric, then a small catch of the folded hem edge, moving along the hem a short distance between each stitch. Because each bite into the outer fabric is so small and shallow, the thread barely shows on the right side of the garment when finished correctly.
- Keep tension light and even as you work. Pulling the thread too tight between stitches can pucker the fabric along the hemline, which is both visible and uncomfortable, and is one of the more common mistakes when learning this stitch.
- Iron the finished hem flat once the stitching is complete, which sets the fold cleanly and helps the repair blend in with the rest of the garment rather than standing out as an obviously re-hemmed section.
04 — Zipper separation: a worn slider, not a doomed garment
When a zipper separates behind the slider as it's pulled up, the slider itself has almost always widened slightly from normal wear and no longer presses the two rows of teeth together firmly enough to interlock. This is genuinely repairable, and according to a professional gear-repair shop, replacing the slider fixes the vast majority of zipper problems people assume require a whole new zipper or a new garment.
A zipper slider works by mechanically squeezing the teeth from two opposing tracks together as it travels along the zipper tape, which is what makes the teeth interlock cleanly behind it. Repeated use very gradually widens the gap inside the slider, and once that gap opens enough, the teeth no longer get pressed tightly enough together to stay locked, which is exactly what produces the separating-behind-the-slider symptom.
- A quick, temporary fix: gently squeeze the back of the slider with pliers to narrow that internal gap slightly, being careful not to apply so much force that the slider cracks, particularly if it's a plastic or molded component rather than metal. This often restores function for a while, but should genuinely be treated as a stopgap rather than a permanent solution.
- The more durable fix is replacing the slider entirely, which is inexpensive and widely available at fabric and craft stores, sized to match the zipper's number (commonly stamped on the slider itself, or determinable by measuring teeth width). The general process: remove the old top stop, slide off the worn slider, install the matching replacement, and crimp a new top stop back into place.
For a stiff or sticky zipper specifically, reach for graphite, not oil
Graphite pencil lead works genuinely well as a zipper lubricant because of how it functions at a molecular level: graphite is made of thin carbon sheets that slide easily against each other with very little friction, and a thin layer of it deposited on the teeth lets the slider glide more smoothly. This is meaningfully different from oil-based lubricants like Vaseline or cooking oil, which a professional outdoor-gear repair specialist specifically warns against for zippers, since these wet, sticky substances tend to attract dirt and grit over time, which then builds up and makes the zipper's sticking problem worse rather than better in the long run.
