Emptying the lint trap after every load feels like the whole job. It is only part of it. A meaningful share of a dryer's lint never reaches that trap at all, and that missing share is where most dryer fires actually start.

01 — How big the problem actually is

Dryers cause a large, well-documented share of home appliance fires

Clothes dryers are involved in thousands of reported home fires every year in the United States, according to NFPA's research on home fires involving dryers and washing machines, with dryers responsible for the substantial majority of those incidents compared to washing machines.

The National Park Service's own fire prevention guidance lists the recurring contributing factors plainly: a lack of maintenance, lint buildup, inadequate venting, and drying inappropriate items. None of these causes require a defective appliance. They describe an ordinary dryer, used normally, without the maintenance its design assumes.

This is not primarily an old-appliance problem either. CPSC staff testing found that lint accumulates inside a dryer's interior even when the unit is installed exactly according to manufacturer instructions, properly exhausted, and the lint screen is cleaned between every cycle, which means the lint trap alone was never designed to be a complete solution.

Electric dryers show up in this data more often than gas dryers, largely because electric units run at higher discharge heat, which speeds up how quickly accumulated lint can reach an ignition point once airflow is restricted. Gas dryers are not risk-free, but the maintenance habits that matter most are the same for both.

02 — Why the lint trap is not the whole story

A significant amount of lint bypasses the trap and travels into the vent

The lint screen inside the dryer door catches a large portion of what a load produces, but not all of it. Fine lint continues past the screen with the exhaust airflow and gradually accumulates further down the line, inside the vent duct itself, a section of the system most people never look at because it is not visible during normal use.

This is why cleaning the lint trap faithfully after every load, while genuinely useful, does not address the full picture. The vent duct running from the back of the dryer to the exterior wall accumulates lint independently over time and needs its own separate attention, not just the trap.

Duct material and shape matter here. NFPA guidance on dryer installation specifically advises against flexible plastic or foil vinyl ducting, since its ridged interior surface and tendency to sag or kink gives lint far more places to catch and accumulate than a smooth, rigid metal duct does.

Vent length and routing add up too. A long duct run, or one with several tight bends between the dryer and the exterior wall, gives lint more opportunities to settle along the way than a short, straight run does, which is worth knowing before assuming that any dryer installed to code is automatically low risk regardless of layout.

03 — How a blocked vent actually starts a fire

Restricted airflow traps heat, and heat ignites the lint sitting in the duct

A dryer's heating system is designed to work with a steady flow of exhaust air carrying heat and moisture out of the machine. When a vent is partially blocked by accumulated lint, that airflow slows, and heat that should be leaving the system starts building up inside the duct and around the heating element instead.

Highly combustible lint sitting in that same restricted space, exposed to rising heat, is the specific combination behind most dryer duct fires. CPSC testing confirmed that lint accumulating near the heater housing can ignite under the right conditions, and once ignited, fire can travel along the length of the duct rather than staying contained near the machine.

A load that takes noticeably longer to dry than it used to is often the earliest sign of this restriction happening, well before anything looks visibly wrong. Reduced airflow shows up as reduced drying performance long before it shows up as a hazard, which makes drying time a legitimate early warning signal, not just an inconvenience.

04 — The maintenance that actually matters

Three habits cover most of the risk

Clean the lint screen before or after every single load, without exception, since this remains the first and easiest line of defense even though it cannot catch everything. A screen that looks clean but feels coated with a fine film, rather than a distinct fuzzy layer, is worth washing with soap and water occasionally, since dryer sheet residue can clog the mesh in a way that lint alone does not.

Check the exterior vent hood periodically while the dryer is running. A healthy vent shows a strong, warm exhaust and a damper flap that opens freely with the airflow. A weak or absent breeze at the exterior vent, even with a clean lint trap, points to a blockage further down the duct.

Have the full vent duct professionally cleaned on a regular schedule, and immediately if drying times have crept up, a burning smell appears, or the dryer or the surrounding wall feels unusually hot during a cycle. NFPA fire codes require the exhaust duct system to be maintained specifically to prevent the accumulation that turns an ordinary appliance into a fire risk.

Keeping the area immediately around the dryer clear of stored boxes, laundry baskets, and other combustible clutter adds a simple, low-effort layer of protection on top of vent maintenance, since it limits what a fire could spread to in the unlikely event the vent itself is not the point of ignition.
