A gas pump with two nozzles rarely announces which one will damage a lawn mower. The difference between them is a federal regulation, and getting it wrong can cost far more than the price of the fuel.

01 — The regulation behind the pump label

E15 is legally approved for cars, not for lawn equipment

EPA approved E15, gasoline blended with 10.5 to 15 percent ethanol, for use in model year 2001 and newer light-duty vehicles through a Clean Air Act waiver. That approval never extended to non-road engines. The Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center is direct on this point: E10 remains the ceiling for lawn mowers, chainsaws, generators, and other small gasoline engines, regardless of what a vehicle in the same household is approved to use.

EPA's misfueling mitigation rule requires a specific warning label on every E15 pump for exactly this reason, since the agency's own testing found that E15 caused real damage to equipment it was never designed for. Small engines, older vehicles, boats, and other equipment outside the waiver's scope are all covered by the same warning.

Misfueling is a real and ordinary risk, not a hypothetical one. Multi-fuel pumps at the same station, blender pumps offering several ethanol percentages, and a gas can that gets filled at whichever pump is fastest all create the same opening for E15 to end up in a fuel can meant for a mower or a generator.

E15 is not universally available yet, but its footprint has been growing steadily since EPA's approval, and stations that once offered only E10 alongside premium and diesel increasingly add an E15 option to the lineup, which raises the odds of an unfamiliar pump layout catching a hurried fill-up off guard.

02 — Why ethanol damages a small engine fuel system

Small engines were not built with ethanol-resistant components in mind

Modern automotive fuel systems are engineered with ethanol-resistant seals, gaskets, and fuel lines. Small engines, particularly older or simpler carbureted designs common in mowers, trimmers, and generators, frequently are not, which is a large part of why the same fuel that runs cleanly in a car can corrode metal and swell rubber components in a small engine over time.

Ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning it actively attracts moisture from the surrounding air. Oklahoma State University Extension's guidance on ethanol blends in small engines notes that water drawn into the fuel this way can separate from the gasoline over time, sinking to the bottom of a tank or a carburetor bowl as a distinct water-ethanol layer that will not simply mix back in with agitation.

A small engine's carburetor bowl holds only a small volume of fuel, often a teaspoon or two, which means the gum, varnish, and separated water that forms during storage concentrates in a very small space directly at the jets that control fuel flow. That concentration is exactly why small engines show hard-starting and rough-running symptoms from bad fuel faster and more severely than a car's much larger fuel system does.

Two-stroke engines, common in trimmers, chainsaws, and leaf blowers, add another layer of vulnerability, since their carburetors run even smaller passages and jets than a typical four-stroke mower engine. The same amount of gum or moisture that would only slow a four-stroke engine down can fully clog the tiny jets in a two-stroke carburetor.

03 — Avoiding a misfuel at the pump

A few seconds of label-checking prevents most of this risk

Read the pump label before filling any gas can, every time, rather than assuming a station's regular unleaded is automatically E10. Some stations sell E15 as their standard or discounted grade rather than as a distinct premium option, which makes assuming based on price or position at the pump an unreliable habit.

Label and dedicate fuel cans specifically for small engines, separate from any container used for a vehicle that might legitimately run E15, so a can never gets filled at whatever pump was fastest without a second look at what it is actually meant to hold.

If a misfuel happens, the fuel system should be drained before the engine is run, rather than run through and hoped away. Running E15 through a small engine even briefly, especially if the engine then sits unused afterward, is when the ethanol-related corrosion and gumming does the most damage.

04 — Storing fuel so it does not fail you later

Fresh fuel and a stabilizer solve most of what ethanol causes

Oklahoma State University Extension's guidance is direct that gasoline of any kind, ethanol-blended or not, should not sit in a small engine's fuel system for more than about 60 days without a fuel stabilizer added, since gasoline begins to degrade on its own timeline independent of ethanol content.

For equipment going into storage for a season, either add a stabilizer and run the engine briefly to circulate treated fuel through the carburetor, or drain the fuel system entirely rather than leaving untreated fuel to sit through the off-season. A tank left completely empty avoids the moisture and degradation problem outright, at the cost of needing fresh fuel again before the next use.

Buying only as much fuel as will be used within a month for regularly used equipment, rather than keeping a large reserve can on hand indefinitely, sidesteps most of the storage problem before it starts, since fresh fuel run through the engine promptly never has time to separate or gum up the carburetor.

Marking the date of purchase on a fuel can with a permanent marker is a small habit that removes the guesswork later, since it is easy to lose track of exactly how long a can of fuel has been sitting in a garage or shed once the season's projects pile up.
