Over the ridge, not just over the hole
The tarp must extend over the ridge (peak) of the roof so rain flowing downhill cannot get under the uphill edge. A tarp that only covers the damaged area will channel water underneath, making the leak worse.
Secure the tarp with 2x4 battens screwed through the tarp into the roof deck. Nails through shingles alone will not hold in wind. The battens distribute the clamping force and resist uplift.
What works, what does not
Use a heavy-duty poly tarp (6 mil minimum, 10 mil preferred) with reinforced grommets. Lightweight tarps tear in the first windstorm. The tarp should extend at least 4 feet past the damaged area on all sides.
If 2x4 lumber is unavailable, furring strips or any straight lumber works. The key is creating a rigid batten that distributes screw pressure across the tarp without tearing it.
Roofs are dangerous
More homeowners are injured falling from roofs during post-storm repairs than during the storms themselves. Work in daylight, on dry surfaces, with a partner on the ground. Wear shoes with good grip. If the pitch is steep, the damage is extensive, or you are not comfortable at height, hire a professional or request assistance from your local emergency management office.
