Surprise is the point
Motion-activated lights are more effective than always-on lights because the sudden activation draws attention to activity. Always-on lights create constant brightness that people stop noticing. The startling effect of a motion light is itself a deterrent.
Entry points, dark corners, walkways
Install motion lights at all entry points (front door, back door, side door, garage), along walkways, and in dark corners where someone could hide. Cover the sides of the house, not just the front.
Solar-powered motion lights work during power outages, which is when homes are most vulnerable. They require no wiring and can be placed anywhere with sun exposure during the day.
Sensitivity and duration
Adjust sensitivity to avoid false triggers from animals but catch human-sized movement. Set duration to 1 to 5 minutes. Lights that stay on for 30 seconds are too brief to be useful; lights that stay on for 30 minutes waste battery.
