01 — Pipe freezing prevention
Pipes typically freeze below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The most effective prevention is keeping interior temperature above the freeze threshold.
Pipe freeze risk becomes significant when outdoor temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, though pipes in poorly insulated areas can freeze at higher temperatures. The most vulnerable locations are pipes running along exterior walls, pipes in unheated crawl spaces, basements, and attics, and pipes under kitchen and bathroom cabinets against exterior walls.
The American Red Cross recommends several prevention measures when temperatures are forecast to drop severely: open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to allow warm interior air to circulate around the pipes, let cold water drip slowly from faucets served by exposed pipes, and keep the thermostat set no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit even when away from home. A slow drip relieves pressure in the pipe and keeps water moving, both of which reduce freeze risk significantly.
Longer-term prevention includes insulating pipes in unheated areas with foam pipe sleeves, sealing gaps where cold air can reach pipes, installing heat tape on particularly exposed runs, and draining and shutting off outdoor hose bibs before winter.
02 — Thawing frozen pipes safely
Open flames cause house fires. Electric hair dryers and heating pads are the safe tools.
Fire and electrocution risk
Do not use a blowtorch, propane heater, kerosene heater, or any open flame to thaw a frozen pipe. The Red Cross is explicit: open flames present serious fire danger and risk of carbon monoxide exposure. Extreme heat can also cause the pipe to burst. Water damage from a burst pipe is preferable to a house fire.
Safe thawing methods
- Electric hair dryer (keep moving, do not touch water)
- Heating pad wrapped around the pipe
- Portable space heater (keep away from flammables)
- Towels soaked in hot water wrapped around the pipe

- Propane or kerosene heater

- Any electrical device in contact with water
The Red Cross procedure: open the faucet served by the frozen pipe before applying heat, so water can flow as ice melts. Apply heat starting at the faucet end of the pipe, working toward the frozen section. Continue until full water pressure returns. Check all other faucets in the home: if one pipe freezes, others in the same area may be frozen too. If the frozen section is inaccessible or cannot be located, call a licensed plumber.
03 — Well water during power outages
A well pump runs on electricity. When power goes out, water stops.
Private wells rely on electric pumps to move water from the aquifer to the household plumbing. Unlike municipal water systems, which have pressurized distribution infrastructure and backup power, a private well with no generator backup produces no water during a power outage. This is the first thing to understand about well water resilience: the water supply is only as reliable as the electrical system.
Households on wells that experience frequent or prolonged outages have three main options: a generator capable of running the well pump, a hand pump installed as a backup to the electric pump, or stored water to bridge the outage period. Generator capacity must be matched to the pump's starting and running wattage, which varies by pump size. A licensed electrician or pump installer should confirm compatibility before an emergency.
Wells that have been flooded require specific remediation before use. The EPA recommends pumping the well until water runs clear after flooding, then testing before resuming regular use. Flood water can carry bacteria, sewage, and agricultural chemicals into a wellhead, contaminating the water supply. Do not assume a flooded well is safe once it looks normal.
04 — Water heater maintenance
Annual draining removes sediment that reduces efficiency and degrades the tank. The water heater also holds 30 to 80 gallons of emergency water.
A standard tank water heater holds 30 to 80 gallons of treated water at any given time. During a water disruption, this reserve is accessible by draining the tank from its drain valve at the base. The water is already heated and treated, making it usable for drinking, cooking, and sanitation. This is a meaningful reserve that most households never think to account for in their emergency water planning.
Annual maintenance protects both the tank's efficiency and the quality of the water it holds. Sediment, primarily mineral deposits from hard water, accumulates at the bottom of the tank over time. This layer forces the heating element or burner to work harder, increases energy consumption, and eventually degrades the tank lining. Draining a few gallons annually to flush sediment is standard maintenance recommended by manufacturers and plumbing professionals.
The anode rod, a sacrificial metal rod inside the tank, attracts corrosive elements that would otherwise attack the steel tank lining. Most manufacturers recommend inspecting it annually and replacing it every three to five years. A depleted anode rod allows the tank to corrode from the inside, shortening its lifespan significantly. Keeping the rod in good condition is the single most important factor in extending a water heater's life.
05 — Private well testing
Test annually at minimum. The EPA does not regulate private wells.
Private wells serving fewer than 25 people are not covered by EPA's Safe Drinking Water Act. The regulations that protect municipal water customers do not apply to individual household wells. Well owners bear full responsibility for testing and treating their own water.
Both the EPA and CDC recommend testing private well water at least once per year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. The EPA notes that about one in five private wells contains at least one contaminant above a health benchmark. Many of the most dangerous contaminants, including bacteria, nitrates, and arsenic, have no taste, color, or odor at hazardous concentrations. Testing is the only reliable way to know what is in the water.
Additional testing is warranted in several situations: after flooding or any event that may have introduced contamination, after any repair or opening of the well system, if a change in taste, color, or odor occurs, if household members develop unexplained gastrointestinal illness, or if neighboring wells of similar depth test positive for contamination. Use a state-certified laboratory; the local health department can provide a list.
