01 — What this filter does, and does not, do
A gravity filter removes particles. It does not guarantee pathogen-free water.
A homemade gravity filter, built from stacked buckets filled with gravel, sand, and charcoal, removes suspended particles, sediment, and some of the compounds that affect taste and odor in cloudy water. It works the same way a coffee filter or clean cloth does, straining out what is visibly present, just at a larger scale.
The CDC is explicit that most portable water filters do not remove bacteria or viruses, and that filtered water often needs additional treatment before it is safe to drink. A DIY bucket filter has no certified pore size and no way to verify what it actually removed, so it belongs in your process as a pretreatment step, not a finished purification method.
The correct sequence, based on CDC guidance for camping, hiking, and emergency water treatment, is to filter first to clear out particles, then boil or chemically disinfect the filtered water to kill any bacteria, viruses, or parasites that remain.

02 — Materials and construction
Four buckets and three layers of filter media
The build uses four food-grade five-gallon buckets. One holds untreated water and pours into the stack. Two have a half-inch hole drilled in the bottom, each fitted with a layer of fine mesh or a coffee filter secured over the hole to keep filter media from washing through. The fourth bucket, uncut, sits at the bottom and collects the filtered water.
Stack order from top to bottom is gravel, sand, then activated charcoal, each layer roughly four to six inches deep. Gravel removes the largest particles first, sand catches finer sediment, and activated charcoal absorbs some organic compounds and improves taste. Rinse each material separately before loading it, until the rinse water runs clear, since new gravel, sand, and charcoal are dusty and would otherwise cloud your first several batches of filtered water.
Use only food-grade buckets, never containers that previously held chemicals, paint, or automotive fluids, since residue can leach into the water passing through them.
03 — Priming and first use
The first several gallons will run cloudy. That is normal.
Even after rinsing, a newly built filter typically produces cloudy or discolored output for the first two to four gallons as fine dust works loose from the media. Run this initial water through the filter a second time, or set it aside for a non-drinking use, rather than treating it as finished water.
Flow rate through a correctly built filter is slow, often a gallon every 20 to 40 minutes depending on how tightly the media is packed. A filter that runs very fast is usually too loosely packed to filter effectively. One that barely drains may be clogged with fines and need a rinse.
Rebuild the sand and gravel layers, or replace the charcoal, when flow slows dramatically or the filtered water develops an odor. Activated charcoal has a finite absorption capacity and stops improving taste once it is exhausted, though it will keep filtering sediment for a while longer.
04 — After the filter, always disinfect
Boiling or chemical disinfection is not optional
Once water has passed through the gravity filter and looks clear, it still needs disinfection before drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth. Bring it to a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet elevation, per CDC guidance. Boiling is the most reliable method because it kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites in a single step.
If boiling is not possible, add unscented household chlorine bleach following the label instructions, typically an eighth of a teaspoon per gallon of clear water, then let it stand for thirty minutes before use. The EPA notes that chemical disinfectants control most bacteria and viruses but work less well against the parasites Giardia and Cryptosporidium, which boiling handles reliably.
This two-step sequence, filter then disinfect, is the standard approach for any home-built filter without a certified microbial rating. Skipping the disinfection step because the water looks clean is the most common, and most dangerous, mistake in DIY water treatment.
