01 — Water and feed storage
Water is the most overlooked daily requirement in livestock keeping; feed stored improperly feeds rodents instead of animals
Water is the nutrient livestock consume in greatest quantity, and it is the one most often underestimated in capacity planning. University extension guidelines provide species-specific daily minimums, though actual needs increase with temperature, lactation, and body size: chickens need approximately 1 pint (about half a liter) per bird per day, increasing significantly in warm weather; rabbits need approximately 1 cup of water per pound of body weight daily; goats need 1 to 4 gallons per day depending on size and lactation status, with dairy does in peak milk production needing toward the higher end; dairy cows need 30 to 50 gallons per day. A flock of 12 chickens needs about 1.5 gallons per day. These numbers make the case for automatic waterers, larger-capacity waterers, or more frequent manual filling schedules before the animals arrive rather than after.
Feed storage determines how much feed actually reaches the animals versus the rodent population that will exploit any weakness in the system. Metal trash cans with tight-fitting lids are the standard low-cost solution for small quantities; purpose-built feed bins with animal-proof latches handle larger volumes. Plastic containers work but must be inspected regularly because rodents can chew through plastic. Store feed in a dry location; moisture causes mold, which produces toxins that make feed unpalatable and can sicken or kill animals depending on the species and the specific mold. Rotate feed on a first-in, first-out basis, with the freshest sacks going to the back of the storage area when restocking. Any feed that has been contaminated by rodent droppings or urine, smells off, or shows visible mold should be discarded regardless of cost, because the health consequences of feeding contaminated feed routinely outweigh the purchase price.

02 — Manure management
Composted livestock manure is a valuable garden resource; fresh manure applied directly can burn plants and introduce pathogens
Livestock manure is consistently described in university extension composting guides as one of the most valuable soil amendments available to small-farm operators, and consistently contaminated in ways that make fresh application harmful. Fresh manure contains high nitrogen concentrations that can burn plants, weed seeds that germinated in the digestive tract of the animal, and potentially pathogenic bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli species. Composting transforms it: the heating process in an active compost pile reaches 130 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit in the pile interior, temperatures that kill most pathogens and the majority of weed seeds over several weeks of sustained heat. The finished product is dark, crumbly, and pleasant-smelling rather than ammonia-sharp, and can be applied to vegetable gardens and food-producing beds.
The composting process requires a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio that manure alone does not provide: manure is high in nitrogen but benefits from the addition of carbon-rich materials such as straw bedding, wood shavings, cardboard, or dry leaves. Most keepers compost the manure-bedding mixture that comes out of coops and hutches together, which naturally approximates the right ratio. The pile should be kept moist but not wet, turned periodically to introduce oxygen and redistribute heat, and monitored to confirm it is reaching temperature rather than sitting cool. Extension guidance recommends applying composted manure to vegetable gardens at least 60 days before harvest as a further safety margin for any residual pathogen concerns. Manure piled near waterways or in areas with drainage toward wells or surface water should be avoided.
- Do not apply fresh manure to vegetable gardens. It burns plants, contains weed seeds, and may carry pathogens. Compost it first.
- Active compost reaches 130 to 150°F, killing most pathogens and weed seeds. Turn the pile regularly and confirm it is heating rather than just sitting.
- Compost the manure-bedding mix together. The straw or shavings provide carbon that balances the nitrogen in the manure and improves the finished compost structure.
- Apply finished compost to vegetable areas at least 60 days before harvest. This follows USDA National Organic Program guidance for manure composting safety margins.
03 — First aid and evacuation
A basic livestock first aid kit and a pre-built evacuation plan address the two situations most likely to end badly without prior preparation
A livestock first aid kit differs from a household kit primarily in scale and species specificity. Core contents include: antiseptic wound spray (Vetericyn or a similar product labeled for livestock); gauze pads and cohesive bandage wrap (Vetrap or equivalent) for wound dressing; a digital rectal thermometer, because livestock health assessment begins with core temperature; electrolyte powder that can be dissolved in water for oral administration to a sick or heat-stressed animal; syringes for administering oral medications without a needle; hoof pick and trimmers if goats or sheep are kept; and a reference card with normal temperature ranges by species (chickens: 104 to 107°F; rabbits: 101 to 104°F; goats: 101.5 to 104°F). A relationship with a large-animal or exotic veterinarian established before an emergency is part of the preparation; not every general practice veterinarian treats livestock, and finding one for the first time during a crisis delays care.
Livestock evacuation takes significantly longer than household evacuation, and planning must account for that lead time. The primary needs are: pre-identified destinations willing to receive your specific animals (other farms, fairgrounds, or feed store contacts are common options), transport containers appropriate to each species (dog crates for poultry and rabbits, livestock trailer or large utility trailer for goats and sheep), identification on each animal (leg bands, ear tags, or a photograph log kept off-site), and a written list of which animals are where, what each needs medically, and contact information for the vet. The evacuation trigger point should be determined in advance: FEMA's guidance on livestock evacuation consistently notes that last-minute evacuations with animals fail because they take more time than was assumed and because trailer space and destination capacity is consumed by people who planned earlier.

- Establish a vet relationship before an emergency. Not all vets treat livestock; finding one for the first time during a crisis delays care.
- Pre-identify evacuation destinations, confirm they will accept your animals, and have transport staged or accessible. Livestock evacuation takes more time than most people estimate.
- Keep an off-site record of each animal, its medical needs, and veterinary contacts. A fire or flood that requires evacuation may also make phones or on-site records inaccessible.
04 — Zoning and legal research
Zoning research is the first step, not an afterthought, when considering any livestock
Local zoning ordinances, HOA rules, and municipal codes govern what animals may legally be kept on a given property. These rules vary more than most prospective keepers anticipate: many suburban and urban areas allow hens (often with a maximum number, no roosters, and minimum coop setback distances from property lines), fewer allow goats or sheep, and regulations on rabbits and bees vary enormously by jurisdiction. Some agricultural zones that permit most livestock explicitly prohibit commercial operations or sales, which affects whether home-processed poultry or eggs can be sold even from a farm stand. Homeowners associations often impose additional restrictions beyond municipal zoning, and HOA rules can be enforced independently and in some cases more strictly than municipal codes.
The relevant contacts are the local planning or zoning department, which maintains the current ordinance text and can answer questions about specific species; and the HOA, if one exists, where the governing documents and sometimes an architectural or livestock committee handles these questions. Buying animals before confirming legality creates a situation where the animals either must be re-homed or kept illegally; either outcome represents avoidable loss and distress. Many new keepers skip this step because they assume rural or semi-rural settings are permissive, but zoning classifications do not always match physical landscape: a property that appears rural may be classified suburban or have an HOA with restrictive covenants from a previous development phase.
- Contact the local planning or zoning department before acquiring any livestock. Get the current rules in writing; verbal assurance from a neighbor or prior resident is not reliable.
- Check HOA documents separately from municipal zoning. HOA restrictions operate independently and may be stricter.
- Ask specifically about your species, number, and intended use. General permission to keep "livestock" may not include bees; permission to keep "chickens" may not permit roosters; permission for personal production may not permit sales.
- Acquiring animals before confirming legality is the most avoidable mistake in livestock keeping. Re-homing bonded animals or facing a compliance order both represent unnecessary difficulty.
