03 — Heat wave response

Heat wave safety is mostly about timing, hydration, and checking on people who can't self-monitor

Extreme heat kills more people in the United States in a typical year than any other weather hazard, and the CDC and emergency management agencies frame the response around prevention rather than treatment, since the actions that keep a heat wave from becoming a medical emergency are simple and well established. Stay hydrated throughout the day rather than only when thirsty; the CDC recommends checking urine color as a rough hydration gauge, with light yellow or clear generally indicating adequate intake. 04 — Wildfire smoke and the Air Quality Index

AQI turns invisible smoke into a number that tells you exactly when to change your behavior

The EPA's Air Quality Index is a standardized 0-to-500 scale that converts the actual measured concentration of pollutants, most relevantly fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during a wildfire smoke event, into a single number with a consistent meaning nationwide. The scale divides into six color-coded categories: 0 to 50 (Good), 51 to 100 (Moderate), 101 to 150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups), 151 to 200 (Unhealthy), 201 to 300 (Very Unhealthy), and 301 to 500 (Hazardous). Each AQI band implies a different response, and the CDC and EPA are specific that not all masks provide protection against wildfire smoke.
