01 — Recognizing a tornado forming without a warning

A tornado warning depends on radar detection or a confirmed spotter report reaching the local National Weather Service office in time to issue and distribute the alert. That process takes time a fast-developing storm does not always allow, which is why recognizing the environmental signs directly is a genuine safety skill, not a backup to official alerts. Tornado-producing storms are frequently rain-wrapped or occur after dark, conditions under which the funnel itself may never become visible before the tornado is already on the ground. In those cases, a persistent, loud roar, often described as sounding like a freight train and distinct from thunder because it does not fade, and an approaching cloud of debris at ground level are the signals that confirm a tornado is present, whether or not it can be seen.
- A rotating wall cloud is a stronger signal than sky color alone. A greenish or dark sky suggests a severe, hail-producing storm; a rotating wall cloud specifically suggests tornado formation is actively underway.
- Do not wait for a visible funnel. A tornado can be rain-wrapped, occur at night, or form in air too dry to make a visible condensation funnel. Treat a debris cloud or a persistent roar as confirmation on its own.
- A tornado roar does not fade the way thunder does. If a loud, sustained roaring sound continues rather than dying off within a few seconds, treat it as an active tornado signal and shelter immediately.

02 — The in-home tornado shelter procedure
Lowest floor, interior room, away from windows, and under something sturdy
National Weather Service guidance for sheltering in a home during a tornado is specific and consistent across NWS field offices: go to the lowest floor of the structure, to a small interior room or hallway with no windows, such as a bathroom, closet, or interior hallway. A basement is the strongest option where one is available, since it removes the household from the level of the structure most exposed to wind and debris entirely. Once in the shelter location, get under a sturdy piece of furniture, such as a heavy table or workbench, and cover your head and neck; if a helmet, a blanket, and hard-soled shoes are readily available, NWS and weather.com both note they add meaningful protection against flying debris.
The reasoning behind each element of this procedure is specific, not arbitrary. Interior rooms and hallways have more structural material between the occupant and the exterior wind and debris field than any room with an exterior wall or window. The lowest floor reduces exposure to a structure's most vulnerable upper levels. Getting under sturdy furniture protects against falling debris from a compromised roof or ceiling, the single largest source of tornado-related injury in a home that does not experience a full structural collapse.

03 — Drop, Cover, and Hold On for earthquakes
Doorways don't protect you in a modern building; getting low and covering your head does
"Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the protocol endorsed jointly by USGS, FEMA, the Red Cross, and the Earthquake Country Alliance (organizer of the Great ShakeOut drills) as the correct response to earthquake shaking in most situations. The mechanics are specific: drop to your hands and knees immediately, which prevents strong shaking from knocking you down uncontrolled; take cover under a sturdy desk or table if one is within a few feet, or move next to an interior wall away from windows if no shelter is available; and hold on to your shelter, or to your own head and neck, until the shaking fully stops.
The doorway myth persists from a specific historical source: early photographs of collapsed adobe buildings in which the wooden door frame was the only structural element still standing, which created the folk belief that doorways were inherently reinforced. In modern wood-frame, steel, or concrete construction, a doorway carries no structural advantage over any other part of the building, provides zero overhead protection from falling objects, and adds a new risk: an unsecured door can swing and strike you during strong shaking. USGS data from the 1994 Northridge earthquake found that falling and flying objects, not structural collapse, caused the majority of the roughly 9,000 recorded injuries, which is precisely the category of harm Drop, Cover, and Hold On is designed to prevent.

The second half of the rule matters just as much as the first. NOAA and the National Park Service both specifically warn against leaving shelter as soon as the rain stops or the thunder seems to have quieted; lightning can strike from a storm's leading or trailing edge up to roughly 10 miles from the visible precipitation, meaning a storm that looks like it has passed can still pose a direct threat. Wait a full 30 minutes after the last audible thunder before resuming any outdoor activity, and do not restart that 30-minute count until thunder has stopped entirely.
- There is no safe place outdoors during a thunderstorm. A sturdy, fully enclosed building with wiring and plumbing, or a hard-topped vehicle with the windows up, are the only genuinely safe options; open-sided structures, dugouts, and small sheds do not count.
- Flash-to-bang divided by five gives distance in miles. A gap of 30 seconds or less means the storm is close enough that shelter is needed immediately, not just advisable.
- Wait the full 30 minutes after the last thunder, not the last rain. Lightning can strike up to roughly 10 miles from a storm's visible precipitation, which is why clearing skies or stopped rain are not reliable indicators that the danger has passed.
- Avoid corded electronics and plumbing while sheltering. Lightning can travel through electrical wiring and pipes; avoid showers, baths, and corded phones until the 30-minute window has fully elapsed.
05 — Natural warning signs of a tsunami
A strong coastal earthquake, a receding ocean, or a roaring sound are warnings on their own
NOAA is explicit that official tsunami warnings, delivered through radio, television, Wireless Emergency Alerts, and NOAA Weather Radio, may not arrive in time for a tsunami generated close to shore, which is exactly why recognizing natural warning signs directly can be the only warning a coastal resident receives. Any one of these three signs is sufficient justification to evacuate immediately, without waiting for confirmation from official channels. A receding ocean means the water is about to return with far greater force and height than it left. - A strong or long coastal earthquake is itself a tsunami warning. Shaking that lasts 20 seconds or more, or that makes standing difficult, justifies moving to high ground once the shaking stops, without waiting for an official tsunami alert.
- A receding ocean is a warning to evacuate, not an invitation to look. Water pulling back unusually far exposes the seafloor because the wave is about to arrive with far more force than the water that just left.
