Pitch is a ratio, expressed as rise over a 12-inch run
Roof pitch describes how many inches a roof rises for every 12 inches it runs horizontally, written as a ratio like 4:12 or 8:12. A 4:12 roof rises 4 inches for every foot of horizontal distance, a gentle slope. An 8:12 roof rises 8 inches over the same distance, twice as steep, and the practical difference between those two numbers is larger than the numbers themselves suggest.
OSHA's fall protection standard for construction draws its own line at exactly this ratio. A roof at 4:12 or less is classified as low-slope; anything steeper is steep-slope, and the two categories are treated as meaningfully different hazards, not just a matter of degree.
A rough field estimate of pitch is possible with a short level and a tape measure: hold the level horizontal against the roof surface, and measure the vertical gap at the 12-inch mark from the high end. That gap in inches is the first number in the pitch ratio.
This measurement can usually be done safely from a ladder at the eave, without stepping onto the roof itself, which makes it a reasonable first step even for a repair that ultimately turns out to be a hire-it-out job. Knowing the number before climbing up changes the decision, not just the conversation with a roofer afterward.
02 — Why OSHA treats the two categories so differently

This distinction exists for professional roofers working with full fall-arrest equipment, training, and a crew. A homeowner without that equipment or training is working with a smaller safety margin on the exact same roof, which makes the low-slope versus steep-slope line even more relevant to a DIY decision than it is to a professional one.
03 — What this means for a repair decision
Most residential roofs already sit in the steeper category
A large share of common residential shingle roofs fall at or above a 6:12 pitch, comfortably inside OSHA's steep-slope classification, which means the fall protection standard written for the more dangerous category is the one that actually applies to the roof over most people's heads, not the more lenient low-slope rules.
A repair near the ridge of a steep roof, or one that requires walking any real distance across the sloped surface rather than working from a ladder at the eave, is a materially different task than replacing a single shingle within easy reach of a properly set ladder. Distance from a stable access point, not just pitch alone, compounds the risk.
Weather conditions shift this calculation further. A roof surface that is damp, frosted, or covered in moss or lichen loses traction regardless of its pitch, and a repair that would be reasonable on a dry 5:12 roof on a clear day is a different proposition entirely on the same roof after rain.
Roofing material factors in too. Architectural asphalt shingles offer more grip underfoot than smooth metal panels or older three-tab shingles, which is worth accounting for separately from pitch when judging how confidently a person can move across a given roof surface.

When a repair does not fit that profile, the honest answer is usually to make the call rather than test the pitch against the numbers alone.
A second set of hands does not remove the risk on a steep or difficult roof, but it does add a genuine safety margin over working alone, since someone on the ground can call for help immediately if something goes wrong. If a repair is going ahead despite marginal conditions, doing it with a second person present is a meaningfully safer choice than the same repair done solo.
