01 — THE BACKSTITCH

The strongest basic hand stitch

The backstitch is the strongest basic hand stitch because each stitch overlaps the previous one, creating a continuous unbroken line of thread. It is the hand-sewing equivalent of a machine straight stitch.

To backstitch: bring the needle up through the fabric, then insert it one stitch-length behind where it emerged. Bring it up one stitch-length ahead of the thread. Repeat. The result is a solid, durable seam.

02 — BUTTONS AND PATCHES

Two repairs that save clothing

Replacing a button takes two minutes. Thread a needle with doubled thread, knot the end. Position the button, stitch through each hole 4 to 6 times, then wrap the thread around the stitches between button and fabric (the shank) before tying off. The shank provides room for the fabric to sit flat when buttoned.

Patching a hole in work clothes or outdoor gear: cut a patch from similar-weight fabric, larger than the hole by at least half an inch on all sides. Pin or baste in place, then stitch around the edges using a backstitch or whip stitch.

03 — THE KIT

What to keep on hand

A basic sewing repair kit fits in a tin: needles (assorted sizes), thread (black, white, and one color matching your most common clothing), scissors, pins, a thimble, and a few spare buttons. This kit handles 90% of clothing repairs and costs under ten dollars.
