01 — THE CORE

Multi-use items first

The most valuable vehicle kit items serve multiple functions. A reflective emergency blanket (mylar space blanket) provides warmth, ground cover, signaling, and shade. A headlamp provides hands-free light for tire changes, engine checks, and walking. A multi-tool handles cutting, gripping, and prying.

FEMA and Red Cross recommend: jumper cables (or a lithium jump starter), a basic first aid kit, a flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries, an emergency blanket, water and non-perishable snacks, and a phone charging cable.

02 — SEASONAL ADDITIONS

Winter and summer

Winter: ice scraper, small shovel, bag of sand or cat litter (traction), extra warm clothing, extra blanket, hand warmers.

Summer: extra water (at least one gallon), sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and an awareness that heat exhaustion can occur quickly if you are stranded.

03 — MAINTENANCE

Check twice a year

Inspect your vehicle kit at each time change (spring and fall). Replace expired food and water. Check battery expiration dates. Ensure the spare tire is inflated. A kit you never check is a kit that fails when needed.
