What the evidence says
Flushing the tap is real advice, but it applies specifically to lead reduction in homes with lead pipes. It does nothing to remove biological contamination and does not substitute for boiling or chemical treatment during a boil-water advisory.
The EPA and CDC both recommend flushing the tap before drawing drinking water as a strategy for reducing lead exposure. Lead dissolves from pipes into water that sits in contact with them. Running the cold tap for one to two minutes (or longer if a home has a lead service line) draws fresh water from the street main rather than water that has been standing in indoor pipes. The key word is cold: the CDC specifies cold water only, because hot water dissolves lead more readily and should not be used for drinking or cooking regardless of flushing.
What flushing does not do is kill bacteria, viruses, or protozoa. A boil-water advisory is issued because the water may contain pathogens, not because water has been sitting in pipes. Running the tap before drinking has no effect on biological contamination. During an active boil-water advisory, tap water must be boiled for one minute (three minutes above 6,500 feet) before use, regardless of how long it has run first.
These are two separate issues that require two separate responses. Flushing addresses chemical leaching from pipes. Boiling addresses biological threats from the water supply. A household that flushes but does not boil during a biological advisory is taking a risk.
02 — The bleach safety myth
Household bleach is safe and effective at the doses used for water treatment
Common myth
Household bleach is a dangerous chemical that should never be added to drinking water.
What the evidence says
The CDC and EPA both recommend household bleach as an approved emergency water disinfectant. At the specified dose, it is safe and effective. The bleach used in municipal water treatment is the same active ingredient at higher concentration.
Municipal water systems use chlorine to disinfect drinking water as a standard part of treatment. Household bleach contains sodium hypochlorite, the same compound, at a concentration of 5 to 9 percent. The CDC and EPA provide explicit dosing guidance for emergency water treatment using household bleach, and specify that it kills bacteria and viruses effectively at those doses.

The treated water should have a faint chlorine smell after 30 minutes. If it does not, the EPA recommends repeating the dose and waiting another 15 minutes before using it. The chlorine dissipates over time, which is why properly treated water does not taste strongly of bleach when consumed.
The critical constraints are product selection and dose. Use only plain, unscented liquid bleach with sodium hypochlorite as the sole active ingredient. Do not use scented bleach, color-safe bleach, or bleach with added cleaners. These contain additional chemicals that are not safe to drink. Bleach that is more than a year old may have degraded and should be replaced. And bleach does not address chemical contamination, heavy metals, or Cryptosporidium.
03 — The three-day dehydration myth
The rule of three is a planning guideline, not a physiological limit

A person can survive exactly three days without water.
What the evidence says
Survival time without water varies from less than one day in extreme heat or high physical exertion to more than a week in cool conditions with minimal activity. Three days is a rough midpoint, not a safe or reliable limit.
The "rule of three" is a survival heuristic, not a medical finding. It states that a person can survive three minutes without air, three hours without shelter in extreme conditions, three days without water, and three weeks without food. These are rough estimates intended for planning purposes, not precise thresholds.
Actual survival time without water depends on several variables. Ambient temperature is the largest factor: in extreme heat above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, dehydration becomes dangerous within hours. A person doing heavy physical labor outdoors in summer may be at serious risk within a day. Conversely, someone resting indoors in a cool environment may survive several days longer than the three-day estimate suggests.
Age and health status also affect the timeline. Older adults, infants, people with fever or diarrhea, and those taking diuretics or certain medications may become seriously dehydrated faster than healthy adults. Dehydration impairs cognitive function measurably at levels of just two percent body water loss, well before the symptoms most people associate with severe thirst.
The practical implication is not to push toward any limit. The three-day heuristic is useful as a minimum storage target, not as a comfort zone. Dehydration begins affecting performance long before survival is at stake, and heat or illness can compress any timeline significantly.
