01 — Private wells are entirely the owner's responsibility
No agency inspects, treats, or monitors your well water for you
The Safe Drinking Water Act, the federal law that regulates public water systems, does not apply to private wells. The EPA is explicit that government officials do not regulate, treat, or monitor tap water from a private well, which means testing, and any needed treatment, falls entirely on the household.
This surprises many well owners who assume that if the water looks and tastes normal, it is safe. The CDC notes that many of the most common well contaminants, including bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, and lead, have no color, taste, or odor. A well can supply water that looks and tastes completely normal while carrying a real health risk.
Local health departments can often help. Many offer well-testing kits, free or low-cost basic panels, or a list of state-certified laboratories, and CDC guidance directs well owners there for both testing and interpreting results.
02 — What to test every year, and why these four
Total coliform, nitrates, TDS, and pH form the baseline
The CDC recommends testing well water at least once a year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. These four are the baseline, not the complete picture, but they catch the most common and most consequential problems a well develops.
Total coliform bacteria are not necessarily harmful on their own, but they enter water the same way disease-causing organisms do, through a sewage leak, a cracked well casing, or surface water intrusion. That makes a positive result a signal to investigate further, not a diagnosis by itself.
Nitrates matter most for infants. The EPA's maximum contaminant level for nitrate is 10 milligrams per liter, set primarily to protect against methemoglobinemia, a condition in which high nitrate intake impairs a baby's blood from carrying oxygen normally. Households with an infant, or someone pregnant or nursing, are the ones CDC guidance specifically flags for closer attention to this result.
03 — When to test outside the annual cycle
Certain events mean testing now, not waiting for next year
The EPA recommends testing immediately after flooding, after any land disturbance near the well such as new construction or nearby industrial activity, and after any repair or replacement work on the well system itself. Each of these can introduce a new contamination pathway that last year's annual test never accounted for.
A change in taste, odor, or appearance is also a reason to test right away rather than wait. Water that suddenly tastes metallic, smells like sulfur, or turns cloudy is telling you something changed, even if the symptom alone does not tell you what.
Households near farms, industrial sites, or older underground fuel tanks should ask the local health department which additional contaminants are common in the area. Volatile organic compounds such as benzene or MTBE, along with arsenic or radon depending on regional geology, are the kind of local-condition tests a generic annual panel will not catch on its own.
04 — Reading results and what a positive test means
A positive coliform test is a signal to investigate, not a diagnosis
Use only a state-certified laboratory, and follow its sample collection instructions precisely, since bacterial samples in particular must reach the lab and be analyzed within a tight window to produce a reliable result. A basic home test strip is not equivalent to a certified lab report for a health decision.
If total coliform comes back positive, the standard next step is retesting to confirm the result, since a single positive can sometimes reflect a sampling error rather than a true well problem. A confirmed positive, especially for fecal coliform or E. coli, means switching to bottled water or another safe source until the well is disinfected and retested clean.
A local health department can help interpret a lab report and recommend next steps, whether that is shock chlorination, a filtration or UV system, or in some cases a closer look at the well's construction and casing integrity.
