01 — Choosing wood for a project

Species and moisture content matter more than appearance

Softwoods like pine and fir are inexpensive, easy to cut, and forgiving for a first project, but they dent and show wear faster than hardwoods like oak, maple, or walnut. Matching the wood to the actual use of the piece, a cutting board versus a shelf versus outdoor furniture, matters more than picking whatever looks nicest on the rack.

Moisture content is the detail beginners skip and regret. Wood that has not fully dried, sometimes called green or wet lumber, shrinks, warps, and cracks as it continues drying after a project is built. Kiln-dried lumber from a home center is reliably dry. Wood milled from a felled tree needs to air-dry for roughly a year per inch of thickness before it is stable enough to build with.

Grain direction affects both strength and how the wood cuts. A board is strongest along the grain and weakest across it, and understanding this before cutting joints prevents pieces that look fine on the bench and fail under load later.

02 — Basic joinery: matching the joint to the job

A butt joint and screws are honest, not a shortcut

A butt joint, two pieces meeting at a simple square edge and fastened with screws or nails, is the joint most beginner projects actually need. It is not a lesser technique. It is the correct choice for a large share of furniture and shop projects, and reaching for a complicated joint before a project calls for it usually just adds failure points.

A pocket screw joint, drilled at an angle through one piece into another, adds real strength to a butt joint with minimal added skill, and is a reasonable next step once basic square cuts and measuring are comfortable.

Dovetails, mortise-and-tenon, and other traditional joinery earn their reputation for strength and durability, but they demand precision that takes real practice. Building that precision on simple projects first, rather than choosing a joint that requires it for project one, is what actually gets someone to strong joinery faster.

03 — Kickback: the single most dangerous table saw event

Kickback throws the workpiece back at the operator with real force

OSHA describes kickback as the saw seizing the stock and hurling it back toward the operator, most often because the material twists and binds against the blade. This happens more often when ripping, cutting along the length of the grain, than when crosscutting across it.

The CPSC has documented that roughly a third of blade-contact injuries on table saws involve the workpiece kicking back or jumping unexpectedly during a cut, causing the operator to lose control and contact the blade with a hand or arm. This is not a rare edge case. It is one of the most common ways woodworkers get seriously hurt.

A dull blade, an incorrect blade height, or poor-quality lumber with knots or embedded debris all increase kickback risk. Maintaining a sharp blade and inspecting stock before cutting are basic habits that meaningfully reduce how often kickback happens in the first place.

04 — The safety devices that actually prevent kickback

A riving knife, a push stick, and standing to the side are not optional extras

OSHA guidance calls for a spreader or riving knife positioned directly behind the blade, which keeps the cut kerf from closing and pinching the blade as material feeds through, the mechanical cause of most kickback events. A properly installed riving knife is widely considered the most effective single kickback prevention device on a table saw.

A push stick or push block keeps hands well clear of the blade when feeding narrow stock, and OSHA guidance specifically calls for one on any piece under six inches wide. Reaching close to a spinning blade with bare fingers because a push stick was inconvenient to grab is a documented cause of serious injury.

Standing to the side of the blade line, not directly behind it, means a kickback event throws material past you rather than into you. This single habit costs nothing and takes no extra time, which is exactly why it is easy to skip and important not to.
