Alaska unemployment, food assistance, utility help, health coverage, and 211 resources — organized for the moment you need them.
If you just lost your job
These six steps are ordered for maximum effect.
File for unemployment — today.
Alaska has an unpaid waiting period. That clock starts when you file, not when you lose the job. File at Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOLWD) online.
Know your runway.
Savings ÷ monthly essentials = months. Write the number down. A realistic number is more useful than a vague sense of anxiety.
Cut non-essentials now.
Every $100 per month you cut extends your runway. Subscriptions, dining, extras — do it before you need to.
Check health coverage options.
You have 60 days to elect COBRA. Alaska Medicaid expanded — check your household at the state benefits portal.
Apply for food and utility assistance.
Apply through the state benefits portal. SNAP takes up to 30 days to process — apply sooner rather than later.
Call 211.
One call, every local resource. Food banks, rent assistance, utility help, childcare, mental health — specific to your county. Available 24/7 at 211.org or dial 211.
Unemployment benefits
File online through the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOLWD) at the state portal. $370/week — confirmed from official Alaska DOLWD UI General Information page. This is the lowest UI maximum in the country despite Alaska having one of the highest costs of living. File via my.alaska.gov. Weekly certification required. Alaska also has extended benefits that trigger in high-unemployment periods.
State workforce centers offer free job search tools, resume help, skills training, and career counseling.

Apply for utility helpAlaska has expanded Medicaid. Adults up to 138% FPL may qualify at no cost. Check eligibility through the state benefits portal. Alaska expanded Medicaid in September 2015 under Governor Walker. Adults up to 138% FPL qualify. Note: H.R. 1 (signed July 4, 2025) adds work/community engagement requirements for expansion adults — Alaska Native and American Indian individuals are exempt. Alaska is monitoring implementation timelines.
Check Medicaid eligibilityAnswer questions about your situation and see every federal and state benefit program you may qualify for. Broader than any single state portal.
Screen for all benefitsIf you don't qualify for Medicaid, ACA plans may be available with subsidies. Job loss is a qualifying life event — you have 60 days.
