File for unemployment — today.
Michigan has an unpaid waiting period. That clock starts when you file, not when you lose the job. File at Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) online.
Know your runway.
Savings ÷ monthly essentials = months. Write the number down. A realistic number is more useful than a vague sense of anxiety.
Cut non-essentials now.
Every $100 per month you cut extends your runway. Subscriptions, dining, extras — do it before you need to.
Check health coverage options.
You have 60 days to elect COBRA. Michigan Medicaid expanded — check your household at the state benefits portal.
Apply for food and utility assistance.
Apply through the state benefits portal. SNAP takes up to 30 days to process — apply sooner rather than later.
Call 211.
One call, every local resource. Food banks, rent assistance, utility help, childcare, mental health — specific to your county. Available 24/7 at 211.org or dial 211.
Unemployment benefits
File online through the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) at the state portal. Max $530/week effective January 1, 2026 (up from $446 in 2025; rising to $614 in 2027). Plus $19.33 per dependent up to 5. File via MiWAM portal. Certifications filed biweekly. Three work search activities per week required starting July 2026.
