Not every household can afford LED lanterns. Not every outage ends before the batteries do. Candles are proven technology. This handbook teaches you how to choose the right ones, store them properly, and use them safely.

The backup layer
The flashlight batteries ran out on day two. The lantern is still charged, but you are using it in the kitchen. The hallway is dark, the bathroom is dark, and the kids need light in their bedroom at bedtime. You reach into the drawer and pull out a candle.
That moment is real, it is common, and it is where most candle fires start: an unplanned reach for an open flame in an unfamiliar routine. This handbook exists so that when you reach into that drawer, you find the right candle, in a safe holder, with a plan for using it that you thought through before the outage.
Candles are not a substitute for battery lighting. They are a backup layer for when battery lighting is exhausted, unavailable, or beyond the household budget. Five thousand years of human use confirm that they work. The question is not whether candles produce light. The question is which types are safest, how long they last, and how to use them without starting a fire.
BEFORE YOU BUY
Five questions about your household
Answer these before choosing any candle type. Your household situation determines what is safe, what is practical, and what is a waste of money.
Do you already have battery-powered lighting?
If not, consider a $10 LED flashlight or a $15 lantern before stocking candles. Battery lighting is safer and more versatile. If you already have flashlights and lanterns, candles become a genuine backup layer rather than the only plan.
Who lives in your household?
Children under 10, mobile pets, anyone on oxygen equipment, and anyone with impaired mobility all change the safety calculus. Households with these members should stock flameless LED candles for most rooms and restrict real-flame use to supervised spaces only.
Do you have working smoke alarms in every room?
This is a prerequisite, not a recommendation. The NFPA and every fire safety authority require working smoke alarms before any open flame. If your smoke alarms need batteries or are expired, fix that before buying emergency candles.
How long do your outages typically last?
If your outages are usually under 8 hours, a pair of flashlights and a lantern handle it. If you experience multi-day outages from storms, ice, or rural grid issues, candles become a more practical part of the plan because they provide light without consuming finite battery power.
What is your budget?
A pack of 12 tea lights costs $3 to $5. A liquid paraffin candle that burns 115 hours costs $8 to $12. A set of flameless LED candles costs $15 to $25 and lasts for years. Every household can afford some form of backup lighting. This handbook covers every price point.
THE BASICS
A wick, a fuel, and a controlled burn
Every candle works the same way. Heat melts the fuel (wax, oil, or fat) near the wick. The liquid fuel travels up the wick by capillary action. At the top of the wick, the fuel vaporizes and combusts, producing light and heat. The heat melts more fuel, and the cycle continues until the fuel is exhausted or the flame is extinguished.
The differences between candle types come down to three variables: the fuel (paraffin, soy, beeswax, stearin, or liquid oil), the wick (cotton, wood, or braided), and the container (none, tin, glass, ceramic, or a sealed cartridge). Each combination trades off burn time, light output, stability, cost, and safety.
For emergency use, the variables that matter most are burn time per dollar, flame stability (a flickering candle in a draft is a fire risk), fuel containment (dripping wax is a secondary hazard), and whether the candle can be used without a separate holder.
THE HIGHEST-STAKES CHOICE
Open flame or flameless: the fire-risk divide
This is the most important decision in this handbook. Everything else is details about which fuel or which container. This choice determines whether fire risk enters your household at all.
The NFPA data
The National Fire Protection Association reports that candles started an average of approximately 5,800 home structure fires per year from 2019 to 2023, resulting in roughly 70 deaths, 570 injuries, and $270 million in direct property damage annually.[1]
Over half of candle fires started because a combustible item was too close to the flame. Bedrooms are the leading room of origin. December and January see the highest incidence.[2]
Candles used for light during power outages pose a particular risk because the household is operating in an unfamiliar routine, often fatigued, with the normal fire-prevention habits disrupted.[3]
Flameless LED candles
Battery-operated candle-shaped lights with a warm flickering LED that mimics a real flame. No fire risk, no heat, no smoke. Safe to leave on overnight, safe around children and pets, safe near curtains and bedding. Run 100 or more hours on coin-cell or AA batteries.
Best for: Bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, anywhere people sleep, anywhere children or pets are present, anywhere you cannot supervise continuously.
Real-flame candles
Open flame in any form. Requires a calm supervising adult, working smoke alarms, a stable noncombustible surface, 12-inch clearance from anything that can burn, and a fire extinguisher within reach. Must be extinguished before anyone sleeps.
Best for: Supervised common areas (kitchen, dining table) during waking hours when battery lighting is unavailable or being conserved. Adults-only spaces. Outdoor use in calm conditions.
The practical recommendation: stock both. Flameless LED candles for bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, and overnight use. Real-flame candles for supervised kitchen and living room use when battery lighting is exhausted. The two types solve different problems, and combining them means open flame is restricted to the places and times where it can be properly supervised.
THE SPEC THAT MATTERS
Candle-hours, not candle count
"I have 24 candles" is not useful information. "I have 240 tested candle-hours, enough for 30 evenings at two candles for four hours" is a plan you can act on. The only number that matters is total hours of light, and the only way to know it is to test.
The formula
Total candle-hours = number of candles x tested average burn time per candle
Days of coverage = total candle-hours / (candles burned at once x hours per evening)
Example: 24 candles, each tested at 10 hours
24 x 10 = 240 candle-hours
Burning 2 candles for 4 hours per evening = 30 evenings
This is supervised ambient flame, not 24-hour lighting. Your battery lighting covers daytime and overnight.
Marketing burn-time claims are advertising, not field data. A candle labeled "100 hours" may deliver 60 or 120 depending on the wick, the draft, the altitude, and how often you relight it. Test one sample from each type you store. Record the actual burn time and use that number in your planning.
The candle-hours approach also reveals which types are worth stocking. A $3 pack of 12 tea lights (4 hours each) gives 48 candle-hours. A single $10 liquid paraffin candle gives 100 or more. Per-hour cost and per-dollar light are more useful than per-candle price.
CANDLE TYPES
Eight types. Ranked by preparedness value.
Not every candle is equally useful in an emergency. These are organized from the safest and most practical down to the types that work but require the most caution.
Flameless LED candle
Battery-operated, warm-flickering LED in a candle-shaped housing. Coin-cell or AA batteries. No flame, no heat, no smoke, no fire risk. Timer and remote models available. 100 or more hours per battery set.
Best role: Bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, overnight, children's rooms, anywhere unsupervised. Price: $3 to $8 each, $15 to $25 for a set of 3 to 6.
Liquid paraffin cartridge candle
A sealed glass or plastic cartridge filled with liquid paraffin and fitted with a fiberglass wick. The fuel is fully contained. No dripping, no pooling, no spilling. Predictable, consistent burn. Typical burn times range from 50 to 115 hours per cartridge.
Best role: Primary supervised candle for long-duration outages. Best cost-per-hour of any real-flame type. Price: $8 to $15 per cartridge.
Metal-tin emergency candle
A paraffin or soy candle poured into a metal tin with a press-on lid. Compact, stable, self-contained. The tin acts as its own holder and protects the candle during storage. Single-wick tins burn 8 to 12 hours. Multi-wick survival tins (3 wicks) burn 12 to 36 hours and produce significantly more light.
Best role: Portable backup, vehicle kit, camping, go-bag. The lid seals the candle for storage. Price: $5 to $15 depending on size and wick count.
Jar or container candle
A candle poured into a glass jar, ceramic vessel, or heavy container. The container holds the melting wax and keeps the flame recessed below the rim. Widely available, often already in the household. Burn times range from 20 to 80 hours depending on size.
Best role: Supervised room lighting in the kitchen or living area. Choose unscented for emergency use. Price: $5 to $20. Many households already own several.
Pillar candle
A freestanding wax column, typically 3 to 4 inches in diameter and 4 to 9 inches tall. Burns 40 to 80 hours for large pillars. Requires a heat-resistant plate or pillar holder underneath to catch the wax pool. Stable on flat surfaces but can be knocked over.
Best role: Supervised table or counter lighting in calm conditions. Price: $5 to $15. Needs a separate holder or plate.
Votive and tea light
Small, inexpensive, widely available. Tea lights burn 4 to 6 hours in their own aluminum cup. Votives burn 8 to 15 hours and require a votive holder. Both produce less light than larger candles but are useful for placing multiple lights across a room at low cost.
Best role: Supplemental room lighting, bathroom, secondary spaces. Bulk purchase for cost efficiency. Price: $3 to $8 per pack of 12 to 50.
Taper candle
The traditional candlestick shape. Requires a proper taper holder with a secure socket. Burns 6 to 10 hours for a standard 10-inch taper. Provides a pleasant light but is the least stable form factor for emergencies. The elevated flame and narrow base make it susceptible to tipping, especially on uneven surfaces or around pets.
Best role: Adults-only table use in calm conditions with a weighted holder. Not recommended as a primary emergency candle. Price: $5 to $12 per pair.
Beeswax candle
Natural beeswax burns cleaner and brighter than paraffin, with less soot and a faint honey scent. Higher melting point means a harder candle that holds its shape better in warm storage. Available as pillars, tapers, and rolled sheets. Burns roughly 20% longer than paraffin of the same weight.
Best role: A premium option for households that prefer natural materials. Significantly more expensive per hour than paraffin. Price: $10 to $30 per candle. A budget consideration, not a practical necessity.
THE SAFETY GATE
What candles cannot do, and when never to use them
Every candle type in this handbook is an open flame (except flameless LEDs). Open flame has rules. These are not suggestions.
Candles are not space heaters
A candle produces roughly 80 watts of thermal energy. A small space heater produces 1,500 watts. Concentrating candle heat with inverted flowerpots or terracotta assemblies creates severe burn and fire hazards. The setup has been repeatedly documented as a fire starter by fire departments across the country. For cold-weather outages, the effective tools are insulation, layered clothing, sleeping bags, and safe indoor-rated heating equipment.[3]
Never use open flame under these conditions
- During sleeping hours. The supervising adult must be awake.
- During active evacuation.
- When you smell natural gas or suspect a gas leak.
- Near oxygen equipment or in a room where oxygen is in use.[4]
- In a vehicle or tent.
- When no working smoke alarms are present.
- When supervision is impaired by fatigue, illness, or alcohol.
- Around unsupervised children or roaming pets.[2]
When open flame is a reasonable choice
- A calm adult is awake and present in the room.
- Working smoke alarms are in place.
- The candle is in a proper holder on a stable, noncombustible surface.
- A fire extinguisher is accessible.[3]
- At least 12 inches of clearance from anything that can burn.
- Battery lighting is unavailable or being conserved for task use.
