The power goes out. Now what?
A thunderstorm knocks the grid offline at 10 p.m. The house goes dark. Someone reaches for their phone, finds it at 34 percent, and turns on the flashlight app. In an hour the phone is dead and the outage is still going.
A proper emergency lighting setup costs less than a single restaurant meal and lasts for years. The difference between stumbling through the house and moving through it calmly is three or four purpose-built lights, stored where you can reach them without seeing them first.
This handbook covers every type of light a household might need, explains what the specs on the package actually mean, compares battery systems honestly, and helps you build a layered lighting plan that fits your situation and budget.
Before you buy
Five questions about your household
Answer these before you look at a single product. They determine which types, batteries, and quantities make sense for you.
How many rooms need immediate light when the power drops?
Count bedrooms, the kitchen, the bathroom, and any hallway longer than ten feet. Each location that someone might need to move through in the dark needs its own light staged there.
Does anyone in the household need both hands free?
Cooking, childcare, pet care, medical tasks, and home repairs all require free hands. If yes, at least one headlamp belongs in the plan.
What battery sizes does your household already use?
Standardizing on one or two sizes (AA and AAA are the most common) means fewer types of spares to store. USB-C rechargeable lights reduce the battery question but trade it for a charging question.
How long is a realistic outage where you live?
Urban outages average a few hours. Rural and storm-belt outages can last days. Longer expected outages mean more spare batteries or a way to recharge (solar panel, vehicle charger, portable power station).
Does anyone carry a light daily?
A keychain or EDC flashlight that is always in a pocket means the first minutes of any outage, parking lot walk, or roadside stop are covered without reaching for anything. Not everyone wants one, but those who carry one use it constantly.
How it works
An LED converts electricity into directional light
Every modern emergency light uses a light-emitting diode. An LED is a semiconductor that releases photons when current flows through it. Unlike an incandescent bulb, which heats a filament until it glows and wastes most of its energy as heat, an LED converts a large share of its input power directly into visible light.
The practical consequences for emergency lighting are significant. LED lights run cooler, last tens of thousands of hours before the emitter degrades, tolerate drops and vibration far better than a glass filament, and draw a fraction of the power. A single AA battery that powered an incandescent flashlight for an hour can power an LED on low for 30 or more hours.
The optic in front of the LED shapes the beam. A smooth reflector produces a tight, focused hotspot with distance. A textured or orange-peel reflector spreads the light wider for close work. A TIR (total internal reflection) lens produces a clean, even beam. Lanterns use frosted diffusers to throw light in all directions. The same LED can produce very different lighting depending on the optic in front of it.
Understanding this helps you read the spec sheet. "Lumens" measures total light output. "Beam distance" measures how far the optic throws it. A 200-lumen light with a tight reflector throws farther than a 400-lumen light with a diffuser, because beam distance depends on both the output and the focus.
The types
Seven shapes, each built for a different job
No single light does everything well. Here is what each type is actually for and where it fits in a household plan.
Standard handheld
The bedside and kitchen drawer light
The default emergency flashlight. Runs on AA or AAA batteries, produces 100 to 500 lumens, fits in one hand. Good for navigating the house, checking the breaker panel, walking to the car. Every household needs at least two, staged where someone can grab them without seeing.
EDC (everyday carry)
The pocket flashlight you always have
A small, often rechargeable light designed to ride in a pocket or clip to clothing. Typically 200 to 1,000 lumens, often with USB-C charging. The light you have when the outage starts because it was already on you. Sizes range from a tube of lip balm to a thick marker.
Keychain
Always on your keys, always available
The smallest useful flashlight, often under 200 lumens, often USB-C rechargeable. Not a primary emergency light, but the one that covers the first 30 seconds: finding the keyhole, opening the front door, locating the drawer where the real flashlight lives.
Work light
Area lighting for tasks and repairs
A broader-beam or panel-style light designed to illuminate a work area rather than a spot. Often magnetic, hook-mounted, or tripod-compatible. Good for engine compartments, electrical panels, under-sink plumbing, and any repair where you need to see a whole surface rather than a point.
Right-angle
Half flashlight, half headlamp
The head sits at 90 degrees to the body, so the light shines perpendicular to your grip. Clip it to a chest pocket pointing forward, or use the included headband as a headlamp. Versatile for anyone who wants one light that works both ways. Popular in trades and with first responders.
Headlamp
Hands-free light that follows your eyes
A light mounted on an elastic headband. The beam points wherever you look, and both hands stay free. Essential for cooking during an outage, childcare at night, first aid, repairs, walking a dog, and any task where a flashlight in one hand is one hand too few. At least one per household.
Lantern
Room light without the room light
Throws light in all directions. Set it on a table and a room becomes usable. Hang it from a hook and a hallway opens up. The closest thing to normal lighting during an outage. Look for models with both bright and dim settings so a single lantern can light dinner or serve as a nightlight.
A layered plan
The combination that covers everything
The minimum for a household: one flashlight per bedroom, one headlamp per adult, and one lantern for the common area. A keychain or EDC light on whoever carries keys most often. Total cost for a solid baseline: $40 to $80. Upgrade from there based on outage history and household size.
Reading the label
What the specs on the package actually mean
Flashlight packaging is full of numbers. Some are useful. Some are meaningless without context. Here is how to read them.
Lumens
Total light output measured at the emitter. Higher lumens means more total light, but it does not tell you how far it reaches or how it is distributed. A 300-lumen lantern spreads light in every direction. A 300-lumen flashlight with a tight reflector throws a beam 200 meters. Same number, completely different use. For household emergency flashlights, 100 to 300 lumens on a medium setting is practical. Above 500, you are trading runtime for output you rarely need indoors.
Beam distance
The ANSI FL1 standard defines beam distance as the distance at which the light produces 0.25 lux, roughly the brightness of a full moon on a clear night. Enough to see, not enough to work by. Beam distance matters most for outdoor use and search tasks. For indoor emergency use, anything over 50 meters is more than enough.
Runtime
Time from fresh batteries until the light drops below 10 percent of its initial output. The key detail: most manufacturers report runtime on the lowest mode. The highest mode might run for 90 minutes, while the marketing says "12 hours." Check which mode the runtime claim refers to. For emergency planning, the runtime on the mode you will actually use is the number that matters.
IP rating
Ingress Protection, the two-digit rating for dust and water resistance. The first digit is dust (6 means dust-tight). The second digit is water. IPX4 means splash-resistant from any direction. IPX7 means survives brief submersion to one meter. IPX8 means rated for sustained submersion beyond one meter. For most household lights, IPX4 is the minimum. For a vehicle kit or outdoor use, look for IPX7.
Impact resistance
Rated in meters of drop onto concrete. One meter is a counter-height drop. Two meters covers a fall from a shelf. This matters because you will drop the light. Most decent LED lights survive a one-meter drop without issue. Cheap lights with plastic lens retainers often do not.
A note on lumen claims
Budget flashlights on Amazon routinely claim 10,000 or even 100,000 lumens from a single AA-powered body. These claims are false. A single small LED driven at high current produces roughly 200 to 600 real lumens, and that is an honest, useful output. A $12 flashlight that claims 90,000 lumens is lying, and a $40 flashlight that claims 400 lumens and actually delivers 400 lumens is the better tool. Name brands that follow the ANSI FL1 testing standard report honest numbers.
Batteries
The battery decision shapes everything else
A flashlight is a battery holder with an LED at one end. The battery you choose determines runtime, cost, cold performance, shelf life, and whether you can recharge or need spares.
Alkaline (AA, AAA, C, D)
Available everywhere, cheap, 5 to 7 year shelf life. Performance drops in cold and under high drain. Best for: standard household flashlights and lanterns stored for outages.
Cost: roughly $0.30 to $0.60 per cell in bulk.
Lithium primary (AA, AAA)
20-year shelf life, lighter weight, strong cold performance, steady voltage until depleted. Not rechargeable. Best for: long-term storage, vehicle kits, cold climates, get-home bags.
Cost: roughly $1.00 to $1.50 per cell. Energizer Ultimate Lithium is the benchmark.
NiMH rechargeable (AA, AAA)
Rechargeable hundreds of times, reducing long-term cost. Self-discharge means they lose charge over months in storage. Low self-discharge (LSD) cells like Eneloop hold 70 percent charge after a year. Best for: daily-use flashlights and headlamps where you charge regularly.
Cost: roughly $2.00 to $3.50 per cell, amortized over hundreds of cycles.
Built-in USB-C rechargeable
No battery swapping. Plug in a cable, charge from any USB source: wall adapter, power bank, vehicle port, portable power station. Loses charge over weeks to months depending on the light. Best for: EDC lights, nightstand flashlights, and any light you use and top off regularly.
Cost: built into the light. No separate battery purchases.
The strongest approach: both.
Keep rechargeable or USB-C lights for daily and short-outage use. Keep alkaline or lithium-primary lights for extended outages and long-term storage. Standardize on AA as your primary size. Most lights, weather radios, and household devices accept it. Fewer battery sizes means fewer spares to track.
What fails and why
The limits worth knowing before you rely on one
Dead batteries from storage drain
A flashlight stored with batteries installed for two years may click on to nothing. Some lights draw microamps even when off (parasitic drain). Alkaline cells self-discharge at about 5 percent per year at room temperature. The fix: test your lights quarterly, or store lithium primaries alongside the light.
Corroded battery contacts
Alkaline batteries that leak damage the spring contacts inside the flashlight. The white crust is potassium hydroxide. Once it corrodes the contacts deeply, the light is often ruined. The fix: remove batteries if storing the light for more than six months, or use lithium primaries, which almost never leak.
Rechargeable lights that go flat in storage
A USB-C rechargeable flashlight charged in January may be dead by July. Lithium-ion cells lose 2 to 5 percent per month at room temperature. The fix: charge stored rechargeable lights every three to six months, or keep a battery-powered backup alongside them.
Mode cycling in a crisis
Some flashlights cycle through strobe, SOS, and multiple brightness modes on every click. Under stress, in the dark, with adrenaline, cycling through seven modes to find a usable one is genuinely frustrating. Look for lights with simple mode sequences (low, medium, high) and hidden access to strobe so you can reach it intentionally but not accidentally.
False lumen claims on budget lights
A $10 flashlight claiming 90,000 lumens is not a bargain. It is a light that produces 200 real lumens packaged in a lie. This matters because if you plan your household lighting around stated runtime at stated lumens and both numbers are fabricated, you are planning around fiction.
One light, one location
A household with one flashlight has zero flashlights half the time, because it migrated to wherever it was last used. The fix is redundancy: one per bedroom, one in the kitchen, one in the car. Cheap lights in known locations beat one excellent light in an unknown drawer.
