Flashlights. Layer the types.
One flashlight in a kitchen drawer is not a plan. A household needs different types in different places: a handheld in each bedroom, a keychain light on every set of keys, a work light in the garage, and a compact EDC in a pocket or purse. Here is how to think about each one.
HOW TO THINK ABOUT THIS
Not the best flashlight. The right set.
The question is not "what is the best flashlight." It is "what set of flashlights covers every situation my household might face during an outage." A $200 flashlight in a nightstand covers one room. Five $20 flashlights distributed across the house cover the whole home.
Flashlights complement headlamps. A headlamp is better for tasks that need both hands. A flashlight is better for directed viewing: checking under the house, scanning the yard, looking down a hallway, signaling to a neighbor. Most households need both. This page covers the handheld family.
FLASHLIGHT TYPES
Six types. Each earns its place.
Every type below solves a specific problem that the others do not. A household does not need all six, but it needs at least three: a standard handheld, a compact carry light, and a work light.
Standard handheld
The conventional tube-shaped LED flashlight. 200 to 500 lumens, AA or AAA batteries, 10+ hours at medium. This is the workhorse: bedroom nightstand, kitchen drawer, front door hook. Nothing fancy, nothing fragile, nothing that requires special batteries.
Best placement: One in each bedroom, one in the kitchen, one near the front door. Price range: $10 to $30.
EDC (everyday carry)
A compact pocket flashlight with a clip, typically USB rechargeable, 200 to 800 lumens. Designed to live in a pocket, purse, or bag every day. Most are slim enough to clip to a belt or slip into a back pocket alongside a phone.
Best placement: Pocket, purse, laptop bag, vehicle glove box. Price range: $20 to $60.
Keychain light
A very small light attached to keys, a zipper pull, or a lanyard. 20 to 200 lumens. Not a primary light, but always present. Useful for finding a lock in the dark, walking to a vehicle, or providing immediate light the instant you need it.
Best placement: On your keyring. One per person. Price range: $5 to $20.
Magnetic work light
A rectangular or slim rechargeable light with magnets, a hook, or a swivel base. Sticks to a vehicle body, a metal tool chest, a breaker panel door. Produces a broad flood of light for hands-free mechanical work without wearing anything on your head.
Best placement: Toolbox, garage, vehicle kit. Price range: $15 to $40.
Right-angle light
A flashlight with the LED set at 90 degrees to the body. Clips to a shirt pocket, belt, backpack strap, or vest, pointing the beam forward like a body-mounted headlamp. Some models include a magnetic tailcap so they can also function as a work light.
Best placement: Clipped to a jacket or pack strap. Alternative to a headlamp for people who dislike headbands. Price range: $25 to $60.
Penlight
A slim, pen-shaped flashlight, often with a shirt-pocket clip. Low output (20 to 100 lumens), narrow beam. Useful for close-up inspection: reading labels in the dark, checking equipment, examining a wound. Medical responders carry these. They fit in a first aid kit without taking space.
Best placement: First aid kit, tool pouch, desk drawer. Price range: $5 to $15.
CHOOSING WELL
The specs that actually matter.
Flashlight marketing leads with peak lumen count. For emergency use, runtime at medium output and battery compatibility are more important than peak brightness.
Specs to prioritize
Runtime at medium output. This is the number that determines how many sets of batteries you need. A flashlight rated for 40 hours at low and 10 hours at medium is more useful than one rated for 2 hours at turbo. You will use medium 95% of the time.
Battery type. AA is the best standard for household flashlights: widely available, high energy density, and shared with radios, clocks, and other household devices. Standardizing on one battery size across all devices simplifies storage and resupply.
Water resistance. IPX4 (splash-proof) is the minimum for any flashlight that may be used outdoors or near water. IPX7 (submersible to 1 meter for 30 minutes) is better for vehicle kits and outdoor use.
Specs to deprioritize
Peak lumens above 1,000. A 2,000-lumen flashlight at full output drains batteries in under two hours and creates blinding glare indoors. For household use, 200 to 500 lumens is more practical and more efficient.
Multiple modes beyond three. Low, medium, high. That is all you need. Strobe, SOS, beacon, moonlight, and turbo add complexity and increase the number of clicks to reach the setting you want. Simple mode cycling is faster in the dark.
Throw distance. Unless you are searching a large property, a flashlight that throws a beam 400 meters is solving a problem most households do not have. A 100-meter throw covers a suburban yard and driveway.

This is not "the best flashlight kit." It is a layered, practical set that covers every common outage scenario for a household of two adults and two children, using no proprietary batteries and costing under $200 total.

Why this works
Five AA handheld flashlights use 10 AA cells total, which means 10 spare cells reload every device once. The EDC and keychain lights charge from USB, so they can be topped off from a vehicle USB port, power bank, or solar panel without touching the battery supply. The work light covers the one hands-free task that a headlamp does better, for people who prefer not to wear a headband. No single failure takes out the whole system.
PLACEMENT AND CARE
Where you put it is half the plan.
A flashlight you cannot find in the dark is a flashlight that does not exist. Storage location is as important as the flashlight itself.
Fixed-position lights
The nightstand flashlight, the kitchen hook flashlight, and the front door flashlight should never move. Everyone in the household should know exactly where they are. A hook is better than a drawer because you can find a hook by feel in total darkness. Label the hook with a glow-in-the-dark sticker if you want to be thorough.
Carry lights
EDC flashlights and keychain lights live on you or in your daily bag. The point of a carry light is that you always have it, not that you have to go get it. If the EDC light ends up in a drawer at home, it is no longer serving its purpose. Keep it clipped to your pocket or in the bag you carry every day.
Vehicle lights
Keep a compact flashlight in the glove box and a work light in the trunk or behind the seat. In summer heat, avoid leaving lithium-ion battery lights on the dashboard or in direct sunlight for extended periods. The glove box and trunk are usually cool enough. If your vehicle has a USB port, charge the EDC light whenever you drive.
Battery storage
Store spare batteries in a cool, dry place, in their original packaging or a dedicated container. Away from metal objects (loose batteries touching metal can short-circuit). Label the container with the battery size and expiration date. Check and replace once a year, tied to clock changes or smoke detector testing.
