Why This Guide Exists
An ice storm takes out power across your county on a Thursday afternoon. By Friday morning, the gas stations on your side of town are either closed (no power to run the pumps) or have lines stretching into the road. You walk to the shed, pull out a 5-gallon can of stabilized gasoline you filled two months ago, and pour it into your generator. The generator runs your refrigerator, a few lights, and your phone charger for the next 12 hours while the utility crews work. You have a second can in reserve.
That scenario works because of three decisions made months earlier: the right containers, stored in the right place, with fuel treated to stay usable. Get any of those wrong and you have stale gasoline that clogs a carburetor, a code violation that voids your homeowner's insurance, or a fire hazard sitting next to your water heater.
This guide covers the types of approved fuel containers, where you can and cannot store them, how much residential fire codes allow, how long each fuel type lasts, and how to maintain a rotation schedule so your supply is always ready.
Before You Buy
What are you fueling? A portable generator, a vehicle, a lawn mower, a kerosene heater, a camp stove? Each device may use a different fuel, and mixing fuels is dangerous. Know what each piece of equipment requires before buying containers.
Where will you store it? A detached shed or garage is safest. An attached garage is allowed within limits. Inside the home, in a basement, or near sleeping areas is prohibited by fire codes. If you have no detached structure, your storage capacity is limited to 10 gallons.1
How much do you need? A typical portable generator burns 0.5 to 1.5 gallons per hour depending on load. Running a generator 8 hours a day for 3 days requires 12 to 36 gallons of gasoline. NFPA 30 limits residential storage to 25 gallons total. Plan your fuel depth against both your consumption and your legal limit.
How often will you rotate it? Gasoline degrades. If you fill containers and forget them, you will have stale fuel when you need it most. The rotation schedule matters as much as the quantity. Smaller amounts rotated frequently are more reliable than larger amounts left sitting.
What does your local fire code say? NFPA 30 sets the baseline, but your local fire marshal may impose stricter limits. Some jurisdictions cap residential storage at 10 gallons total. Call your local fire department before setting up a fuel storage plan.

The Rules
NFPA 30, the Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, classifies gasoline as a Class IA flammable liquid, the highest hazard classification, due to its low flashpoint (approximately -45 degrees Fahrenheit). For residential properties, NFPA 30 and the International Fire Code set these baseline limits:1

Combustible liquids (diesel, kerosene, lamp oil) have higher limits: up to 60 gallons outside the residence, no more than 25 gallons in a detached garage, and no more than 10 gallons in an attached garage.2
These are baseline limits. Your municipality may be stricter. Some jurisdictions cap total residential gasoline storage at 10 gallons. Before storing fuel, call your local fire department or fire marshal. The call takes two minutes and can prevent a code violation, a voided insurance policy, or worse.
Education
OSHA requires that flammable liquids in quantities of 5 gallons or less be stored in approved safety cans or DOT-approved containers.3 For residential use, this means containers that carry certification from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), ASTM International, or equivalent testing bodies.
The gas cans sold at hardware stores and home centers. Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), available in 1, 2.5, and 5-gallon sizes. Lightweight, inexpensive, and corrosion-resistant. Current models include self-closing spout mechanisms and pressure-relief features required by consumer product safety regulations. These are the standard residential fuel container and are approved for home use when they carry the appropriate certification markings.
Steel or aluminum containers, often NATO-specification design, with a vapor-tight seal. More durable than plastic, better temperature stability, and provide a tighter seal that reduces evaporation. They cost more ($40 to $80 for a quality 5-gallon can) and can rust if the coating is damaged, but many preparedness-focused households prefer them for long-term storage.
Industrial-grade containers with spring-loaded, self-closing lids and internal flame arrestor screens. Type I has a single opening for both filling and pouring. Type II has separate fill and pour openings and a flexible metal spout for controlled dispensing. These are the containers OSHA requires on commercial job sites. They are the safest option available but also the most expensive (often $50 to $150 for a 5-gallon can). For a household with a generator that runs frequently, the investment is reasonable.
OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.144 designates red containers for flammable liquids (gasoline) with yellow lettering identifying the contents.4 The industry-standard color code extends to: yellow for diesel, blue for kerosene, and green for oils. If your household stores multiple fuel types, using the correct colors prevents dangerous mix-ups. Putting diesel in a gasoline generator damages the engine. Putting gasoline in a kerosene heater creates an explosion risk.
The Key Knowledge
Fuel degrades through oxidation and evaporation of volatile compounds. The result is gum and varnish deposits that clog carburetors, fuel injectors, and fuel lines. Ethanol, blended into most U.S. gasoline, accelerates this process because it absorbs moisture from the air, leading to phase separation where the ethanol-water mixture settles to the bottom of the container.
Begins degrading in 30 to 60 days. Generally considered unreliable after 3 to 6 months. With a fuel stabilizer added at the time of purchase, usable life extends to 12 to 24 months depending on the product, container seal, and storage temperature. The U.S. Energy Information Administration notes that most gasoline sold in the U.S. is E10 (90% petroleum, 10% ethanol).
Lasts 6 months or more without treatment because it does not absorb moisture the way ethanol-blended fuel does. With stabilizer, it can last 2 years or more. It is available at some stations (often marketed as "recreational fuel" or "marine fuel") and costs more per gallon. For emergency storage, the longer shelf life may justify the premium.
Lasts 6 to 12 months without treatment. Diesel degrades through microbial growth (algae and bacteria that feed on the fuel) and oxidation. A diesel-specific stabilizer and biocide additive can extend storage life to 12 to 24 months. Stored diesel should be kept cool and dry to slow microbial growth.
The most shelf-stable of the common liquid fuels. Kerosene stores well for 1 to 5 years in a sealed, clean container. It does not absorb moisture like ethanol-blended gasoline and is less susceptible to microbial growth than diesel.
Propane stored in a sealed, undamaged cylinder lasts indefinitely. It does not degrade chemically. This makes it the most storage-friendly fuel for emergency preparedness, though it requires different equipment (propane generators, camp stoves) than liquid fuels. Education
A fuel stabilizer is a chemical additive that slows the oxidation process that degrades gasoline. It works by coating fuel molecules to reduce their exposure to oxygen, slowing the formation of gums and varnish that damage engines.
When to add it: At the time you fill the container, not weeks later. The stabilizer needs to mix with fresh fuel before degradation begins. Adding stabilizer to fuel that has already gone stale does not reverse the damage.
How much to add: Follow the product label. Most stabilizers treat at a ratio of 1 ounce per 2.5 gallons, but formulations vary. Adding more than directed does not extend the life proportionally.
Expected life extension: With a quality stabilizer added to fresh E10 gasoline, expect 12 to 24 months of usable life in a tightly sealed, approved container stored in a cool location. Some manufacturers claim longer, but conservative planning is safer than optimistic labeling.
For generators and small engines: If your generator or lawn mower will sit for more than 30 days, either drain the fuel system or run stabilized fuel through the engine before storage. Stale fuel in a carburetor is the single most common reason a generator fails to start when the power goes out.
Safety
Store fuel in a detached, ventilated structure. A shed, detached garage, or ventilated outbuilding is ideal. The structure should allow air circulation to prevent vapor accumulation. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at ground level, where it can travel to ignition sources.
Keep fuel away from all ignition sources. Water heaters, furnaces, electrical panels, power tools, pilot lights, and anything that produces a spark or flame. Gasoline vapor can ignite from a spark across a room.
Keep containers out of direct sunlight. Heat increases pressure inside a sealed container and accelerates fuel degradation. Gasoline expands approximately 1% per 15 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature increase. Leave headspace (5% to 10% of container volume) to allow for thermal expansion.
Store containers on the ground, not on shelves. A dropped 5-gallon gas can (about 30 pounds full) that ruptures on impact creates an immediate fire hazard. Store cans at ground level on a stable, level surface.
Ground yourself before fueling. Static electricity can ignite gasoline vapor. Touch a grounded metal object before handling fuel containers. Never fill a portable container while it is sitting on a plastic truck bed liner or carpet, which can generate static. Place the container on the ground before filling.
Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. A minimum 20-B rated fire extinguisher should be accessible within 25 to 75 feet of any fuel storage area. See our Fire Extinguishers handbook for selection guidance.
Never use unapproved containers. Glass jars, milk jugs, soda bottles, and repurposed food containers are not designed for fuel storage. They can melt, shatter, or leak. The cost of an approved 5-gallon gas can is $15 to $25. The cost of a fuel-related fire is measured differently.
Maintenance
Stored fuel is only useful if it is fresh enough to burn cleanly. A rotation schedule turns fuel storage from a one-time purchase into a reliable system.
Label every container. Write the fill date and the stabilizer used (if any) on a piece of tape on each can. When you pick up a container six months later, you should not have to guess when it was filled.
Use the oldest fuel first. When you need gasoline for the lawn mower, the car, or the generator, pour from the oldest can and refill it with fresh, stabilized fuel. This is the same first-in, first-out (FIFO) principle used in food storage.
Set a calendar reminder. If you store stabilized E10 gasoline, set a reminder for 6 months. At 6 months, pour the old fuel into your vehicle (it will mix safely with the fresh fuel in a mostly full tank) and refill the container. For ethanol-free gasoline with stabilizer, extend that interval to 12 months.
Test your generator on the stored fuel. Once a quarter, run your generator on your stored fuel for 15 to 20 minutes. This confirms the fuel is still good, exercises the generator engine, and verifies the complete system works. A generator that has not been started in a year is an unknown.
