Phase 1
First 24 Hours.
Write down what is actually needed right now, and identify who can help today.
Assess and Ask
- Write down what your family member needs right now
- Notify your employer that a caregiving situation requires flexibility
- Identify one or two people who can share the load today
Locate and Start
- Call the Eldercare Locator if your family member is 60 or older
- Start a caregiving folder with medical and provider information
Phase 2
First 72 Hours.
Several programs and legal steps can run in parallel: caregiver support, FMLA, and legal authority.

- Apply for the National Family Caregiver Support Program
- Check whether Medicaid can pay you as a family caregiver
- Check VA caregiver benefits if your family member is a veteran
