Disruptions Checklist
Medical Crisis Checklist. What actually needs to happen now.
A serious illness or injury changes the household immediately. This checklist covers what needs to happen in the first 24 hours, the logistics to build over the following three days, and the ongoing reality of bills, leave, and recovery over the first month.

Phase 1
First 24 Hours.
A few things need attention today. Everything else can wait until the immediate situation stabilizes.
Notify and Confirm
- Notify your employer with a simple initial statement
- Confirm your health insurance is active
- Start one folder for insurance cards, providers, and paperwork
Logistics
- Arrange immediate coverage for anyone who depends on your daily care
- Designate one point of contact for updates
Phase 2
First 72 Hours.
These three days are about building the logistics: leave, assistance, and support around you.
Leave
- Formally request FMLA if you qualify
- Check for state paid family and medical leave programs
Assistance and Budget
- Ask the hospital billing office about financial assistance
- Build the bare-bones budget
Support
- Ask about a hospital social worker or case manager
- Ask about generic alternatives and medication assistance programs
Phase 3
First 30 Days.
Bills, benefits, and the household routine settle into an ongoing reality that needs steady management.
Bills and Benefits
- Review every medical bill line by line against the EOB
- Apply for financial assistance before the bill goes to collections
- Negotiate what is not covered by financial assistance
- Explore disability benefits if leave extends beyond FMLA
Household Rhythm
- Reassess the household routine and simplify where possible
Phase 4
What This Could Break Next.
A medical crisis touches income, children, the caregiver, and the job. Each is preventable with one action.
Income
- Watch the household budget if leave reduces income
Children
- Keep children's routines stable and loop in the school if needed
Caregiver Health
- If you are the caregiver, protect your own health and sleep
