The five-minute answer
Use IPM as a thinking process.
NC State's Integrated Pest Management framework is simple enough for a beginner and rigorous enough to prevent many bad decisions: monitor, identify, assess, act and evaluate.
1 · Monitor
Document what is actually happening.
Look at the whole plant, neighboring plants, both sides of leaves, stems, soil surface and roots when appropriate. Record timing and recent changes.
2 · Identify
Name the plant before naming the problem.
Confirm the crop and variety if known. Then separate insect, disease, weed, animal and abiotic possibilities.
3 · Assess
Decide whether action is needed.
Some leaf damage is tolerable. Some insects are predators or pollinators. A treatment can cause more harm than the original problem.
4 · Act
Choose the least disruptive effective option.
Correct cultural conditions, remove affected material when appropriate, use barriers or physical controls, conserve natural enemies, and use pesticides only when justified and permitted.
5 · Evaluate
Return and see what changed.
A diagnosis is not complete because a treatment was applied. Reinspect the crop, record the outcome and revise the hypothesis if the result does not fit.

Understand the system
A sick-looking plant does not prove a disease.
NC State's diagnostic guidance explicitly separates living causes from cultural and environmental causes. Wilt can come from dry soil, saturated roots, vascular disease, root injury or extreme heat. Yellowing can reflect aging, nutrient problems, root stress, disease or other causes. Distortion can come from insects, viruses, herbicide exposure, temperature stress or physical injury. The visible symptom tells you where to investigate, not what product to buy.

Before treatment
Gather the diagnostic packet.
A good diagnostic record is often more useful than a bag of damaged leaves. NC State recommends documenting healthy and damaged tissue, the whole plant, close views, leaf undersides and useful scale references.
Crop, variety if known, planting date and source.
When symptoms began and whether they appeared suddenly or gradually.
One leaf, one plant, one row, one family, one side of the bed, or many plots.
Recent heat, cold, heavy rain, drought, irrigation change, fertilizer or soil amendment.
Insects, eggs, webbing, frass, chewing pattern, ooze, fungal growth, roots or stem lesions.
Whole bed, whole plant, healthy-to-damaged transition, close-up, leaf top and underside.
The procedure
An eight-step community-garden diagnostic routine.
Identify the crop and establish what normal looks like.
Confirm the plant before diagnosing it. Variety, maturity and normal leaf color or shape matter. Compare the affected plant with healthy plants of the same crop when possible.
Describe the symptom without naming the cause.
Write “lower leaves have brown circular spots” rather than “fungus.” Write “new leaves are twisted” rather than “herbicide damage.” Neutral description keeps the diagnosis open long enough to gather evidence.
Map the distribution.
Is the problem on one leaf, one plant, a group of plants, an entire crop family, one irrigation zone or multiple plots? Uniform damage across several unrelated crops may point toward an environmental, water or chemical event rather than a host-specific pest.
Check cultural and environmental causes.
Review soil moisture, drainage, irrigation changes, extreme temperature, transplant stress, fertilizer or amendment use, recent cultivation, wind damage and possible chemical exposure. Do this before declaring the problem infectious.
Look for the organism or specific signs.
Check both sides of leaves, stems, growing tips, soil line and roots when appropriate. Look for insects at different life stages, eggs, frass, webbing, boring, slime, fungal growth or other specific evidence. An insect sitting on a damaged plant is not automatically the insect that caused the damage.
Identify or escalate.
Use current Cooperative Extension or university IPM resources. If you cannot build a sound diagnosis, prepare useful photographs or a proper sample and contact Extension or a plant diagnostic clinic. NC State specifically recommends samples containing healthy and affected tissue rather than a few detached damaged leaves.
Assess whether intervention is justified.
Consider plant vigor, crop stage, spread, likely yield effect and whether natural enemies are already suppressing the pest. IPM is management, not eradication. A few chewed leaves or aphids with active predators may not justify disruptive treatment.
Act, then evaluate.
Correct cultural causes first when they are the likely driver. Use physical, cultural or biological methods when effective. If a pesticide is justified and allowed, follow the current label exactly. Return after the appropriate interval, photograph again and record whether the action worked.
Beneficials and harmless organisms
Not every organism on a plant is the enemy.
UC IPM emphasizes distinguishing pests from natural enemies. Lady beetles, lacewings, syrphid fly larvae, predatory bugs, parasitic wasps, spiders and predatory mites can suppress pests. A treatment that kills them may trade a small problem for a larger one.
Ask what the organism is doing.
Is it chewing the crop, sucking sap, laying eggs on the crop, feeding on another insect, visiting flowers, or simply resting?
Look for multiple life stages.
Immature beneficial insects can look very different from adults. UC IPM notes that syrphid fly larvae, for example, can be mistaken for caterpillars even though they feed on aphids.
Protect the control already happening.
If natural enemies are present and damage remains tolerable, monitoring may be the correct action.
Disease thinking
Disease needs more than a pathogen name.
Plant disease develops through an interaction among a susceptible host, a pathogen and favorable environmental conditions. This is why cultural management matters. Airflow, irrigation timing, leaf wetness, drainage, sanitation, resistant varieties and crop placement can sometimes reduce disease pressure even when a pathogen is present.
Host
Which crop and variety is affected? Are related crops showing the same pattern?
Pathogen
Is there actual evidence or a qualified diagnosis, or only a symptom that resembles disease?
Environment
What changed in moisture, temperature, leaf wetness, drainage, spacing or plant stress?
Management consequence
Sometimes the useful intervention is cultural. Sometimes affected plants should be removed. Sometimes no curative treatment exists. Diagnosis determines which.

Treatment ladder
Use the least disruptive effective control.
Cultural
Correct water, spacing, drainage or fertility problems; remove crop debris when appropriate; rotate crops when the specific pest biology makes rotation useful; choose resistant varieties where available.
Mechanical / physical
Hand removal, barriers, row covers at the correct crop stage, pruning/removal of affected material, washing certain soft-bodied pests from sturdy plants, or trapping where appropriate.
Biological
Conserve naturally occurring predators and parasitoids. Do not purchase or release organisms merely because they are marketed as beneficial; use crop- and pest-specific Extension/IPM guidance.
Chemical
Use only when justified, permitted by garden rules and supported by the current label. “Natural,” “organic” or homemade does not remove toxicology, crop-safety, pollinator or legal questions.
Failure diagnostics
When treatment fails, revisit the diagnosis.
The plant worsened after watering.
Possible issue: saturated or damaged roots rather than drought.
Next check: root-zone moisture, drainage, root condition and disease evidence.
A spray killed insects but the crop declined.
Possible issue: pest was not the primary cause, beneficials were removed, phytotoxicity occurred, or application was inappropriate.
Next check: label, application record, beneficials, symptoms and diagnosis.
The same disease returns every season.
Possible issue: susceptible variety, infected transplants, crop residue, irrigation/leaf wetness, soilborne inoculum or recurring environmental conditions.
Next check: crop-specific Extension disease guidance rather than repeating the same treatment.
Only one side of several plots is damaged.
Possible issue: shared environmental exposure, irrigation distribution, wind, chemical drift or physical event.
Next check: map the pattern before diagnosing a host-specific disease.
There are insects everywhere but little injury.
Possible issue: harmless organisms, pollinators or natural enemies are being mistaken for pests.
Next check: identify organisms and observe what they are doing.
Every online remedy recommends something different.
Possible issue: diagnosis is unresolved or folklore has replaced evidence.
Next check: go back to host, symptom, distribution and qualified diagnostic resources.

Diagnosis is local even when the method is national.
Do this yourself
Build one complete diagnostic packet.
Choose one current plant problem. Do not treat it until you have completed the evidence packet unless immediate action is required for safety or a confirmed regulated pest.
- Identify the crop and variety if known.
- Write the symptom in neutral language.
- Map which plants and plant parts are affected.
- Record soil moisture, recent weather and irrigation/fertilizer changes.
- Photograph the whole bed, whole plant, transition from healthy to damaged tissue, close-up and leaf underside.
- Record visible organisms, eggs, frass, webbing, lesions or root abnormalities.
- Write at least two plausible causes, including one abiotic possibility when appropriate.
- Use Extension/IPM resources or a diagnostic service to narrow the cause.
- Decide whether action is necessary.
- Record the intervention and schedule a follow-up observation.

Common questions
Questions that prevent unnecessary treatment.
A leaf has holes. Should I spray?
Not from that evidence alone. Identify the crop, find the organism or feeding pattern, assess the amount of injury and check whether the plant is continuing to grow normally.
How do I know if an insect is beneficial?
Observe what it is doing and identify it. Natural enemies may be feeding on aphids or other pests. Immature stages can look very different from adults, so use Extension or IPM identification resources when unsure.
Does a fungal-looking spot mean I need fungicide?
No. Similar symptoms can have different causes, and many disease problems are better managed through sanitation, resistant varieties or cultural changes. Diagnose first.
Are homemade sprays safer?
Not automatically. Household or natural ingredients can injure plants, expose people or beneficial organisms, or violate garden policy. Evidence and legal-use questions still apply.
When should I contact Extension?
When you cannot build a confident diagnosis, when the problem is spreading or unusual, when a treatment decision depends on exact identification, or when a proper sample/lab test is needed.
Can I diagnose from one damaged leaf?
Usually that is weak evidence. Diagnostic services prefer context: healthy and affected tissue, whole-plant pattern, timing, roots when relevant, and multiple useful photographs.
