The five-minute answer
Choose the lowest-effort strategy the school can reliably operate.
UGA Extension calls a summer plan essential and presents choices ranging from resting beds to volunteer-managed production. The deeper lesson is not that every school should grow a particular summer crop. It is that summer effort must match real access, water, people and return-to-school goals. If nobody can reliably maintain summer vegetables, the correct plan may be to stop production and protect the beds.
Strategy
Rest the beds, maintain low-effort cover/plantings, run limited production, or operate an active summer program.
Access
Keys, gate/alarm procedure, water, restroom, emergency shelter, parking and campus permissions must work when school is closed.
Coverage
Named owner, backup, duty roster, missed-duty escalation and handoff notes between volunteers.
Safety
Heat, lightning, minors, water, tools, pesticides/IPM and food pathways stay under school rules during break.
Return condition
Define what “ready for school” means before summer starts: safe access, functional water, controlled weeds, known crops, closed repairs and a documented handoff.
Capability promise
After this guide, another authorized adult should be able to operate the summer plan without calling the founding teacher.
The summer strategy
Summer production is optional. Summer responsibility is not.
UGA Extension ranks several Georgia school-garden summer strategies by effort, including resting beds with solarization, low-maintenance crops or flowers, cover crops, and volunteer-managed production. Those examples are region-specific. New World Survival converts them into four operating classes that can be calibrated locally.

Do not infer that Strategy 1 means zero work or Strategy 4 means “free labor.” Higher production generally creates more institutional duties, not merely more vegetables.
The procedure
A twelve-step summer continuity plan.
Choose the summer objective before choosing crops.
Decide whether the school wants protected/resting beds, soil-building cover, a low-maintenance teaching feature, limited produce, or an active summer program. UGA's current 2026 school-garden calendar explicitly asks whether the garden will keep growing or be put to rest before summer break. Let that decision determine labor and planting, not the other way around.
Name one accountable summer owner and backup.
The owner coordinates the roster, access, water, communications and escalation. The backup must be able to obtain access and make the same authorized decisions. A list of volunteers without an accountable coordinator is not a continuity plan.
Verify campus access as an operating system.
Confirm which dates/times campus is open, who may enter, key or badge custody, gate and alarm instructions, parking, restroom access, drinking water, a substantial building or other approved emergency shelter, and whom to call when access fails. Do not assume summer volunteers can enter simply because they volunteered during the school year.
Verify water and shutoff authority.
Record the water source, who can turn it on/off, irrigation controls, known leaks, hose/drip zones, any drought restrictions and who can authorize a repair. Use the Water specialist to calibrate irrigation rather than publishing one national inches-per-week rule. Automatic irrigation reduces routine labor but does not eliminate inspection.
Reduce summer demand before assigning labor.
Remove crops that will become unmanaged, use appropriate mulch or locally recommended cover, repair leaks, simplify irrigation zones, remove unnecessary containers, and choose plants or bed states that fit the actual visit frequency. UGA's summer guidance repeatedly reduces workload through bed-rest strategies, cover and low-maintenance planting. Do not create a labor problem and then ask volunteers to rescue it.
Build the duty roster around tasks and decisions.
UGA recommends a garden duty calendar for parent volunteers and notes that workers should leave notes for the next group. Record the duty window, assigned person, backup, tasks, crop/bed priorities, water instruction, harvest destination, open repair and what condition requires a call to the coordinator.
Train volunteers before the first unsupervised duty.
Train only the work they are authorized to perform: campus entry/exit, water shutoff, tool use, weeds versus crops, food harvest rules, heat/lightning stops, incident reporting and what not to do. Route pesticide/IPM work to the school's authorized system. If minors participate, follow school supervision and volunteer-screening requirements.
Create the heat and weather stop plan.
CDC's July 2026 heat guidance recommends staying cool and hydrated, using shade and breaks and scheduling outdoor activity during cooler parts of the day when possible. Children rely on adults to keep them cool and hydrated. Use current local HeatRisk/air-quality information. If anyone becomes faint or weak, stop activity and move to a cool place. For lightning, the National Weather Service says move to a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle when thunder is heard and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning; small garden sheds and open shelters are not safe lightning shelters.
Control food harvest and landscape treatments.
If summer crops are harvested for students, camps, meal programs or donation, use School Garden Food Safety and the approved receiving route. Coordinate with facilities/grounds because summer mowing, herbicide, pesticide or other landscape work can continue while teachers are absent. EPA recommends school IPM integrated with facilities and landscaping rather than casual pesticide decisions by volunteers.
Create missed-duty and failure escalation.
A duty roster fails if nobody notices the missed week. Require completion notes or check-in. If the assigned person cannot serve, the backup or coordinator is notified. If water fails, heat makes work unsafe, weeds/pests exceed volunteer capacity or harvest cannot be handled safely, reduce the summer objective. Preserve safe function, not every plant.
Define the return-to-school condition.
UGA's summer-management objective is explicit: teachers should return to a garden ready for instruction. Define that operationally: paths/gates usable, no uncontrolled irrigation, weeds and volunteer plantings within policy, harvest disposition known, tools stored, major repairs tagged, beds clearly labeled, school-approved fall planting areas available and no hidden chemical or food-safety question.
Conduct the August/preopening handoff.
UGA's fully reviewed 2026 school-garden calendar puts preplanning, new-teacher tours and the next volunteer calendar into the return-to-school period. Give staff a short summer report: what survived, what failed, what was harvested, water/repair issues, pest or treatment records, who used the site, what must be removed or terminated and what is ready for instruction.
Duty-card standard
“Water and weed” is not enough information for the next volunteer.
Each summer duty window should provide:
- Date/window and authorized access time.
- Primary volunteer and backup.
- Campus entry/exit, alarm and emergency contact.
- Weather/heat check and safe shelter location.
- Water instruction and shutoff location.
- Priority beds/plants and what may safely be allowed to fail.
- Weed/pest inspection tasks and prohibited chemical actions.
- Harvest route, or explicit “do not harvest for food.”
- Open repairs / tools out of service.
- Completion note and escalation trigger.
Minimum viable summer garden
When capacity falls, protect what matters first.
A summer plan should state which functions receive effort before optional production. This turns a failed volunteer week, heat wave or irrigation outage into triage rather than panic.

Failure diagnostics
Summer failure is usually visible in the plan before it is visible in the beds.
Everyone thought someone else had the key.
Likely cause: volunteer names were collected before campus-access authority was verified. Response: rebuild roster from authorized access outward.
Automatic irrigation ran for days after a break.
Likely cause: automation substituted for inspection. Response: shut off/repair affected zone and add visual inspection/leak escalation to duty card.
Three volunteers arrive, none know weeds from crops.
Likely cause: recruitment without task training or labeling. Response: simplify the task, label beds and conduct supervised practice before independent duty.
Produce rots because nobody can take it home or serve it.
Likely cause: production was planned without a food destination. Response: use School Garden Food Safety or stop summer food production.
A parent sprays an unknown “natural” product for insects.
Likely cause: summer volunteers were treated as independent gardeners instead of school volunteers. Response: hold affected harvest and route pest control through the school IPM system.
Teachers return to a jungle and spend September recovering.
Likely cause: no return condition, or the strategy exceeded summer capacity. Response: reduce future summer objective and add a preopening reset/handoff date.
Stop conditions
No owner, no access, no safe plan means no summer-dependent garden.

Do this yourself
Run the summer duty drill before the last school day.
- Choose the summer strategy and write the reason it matches your actual capacity.
- Name the accountable owner and backup.
- Have the backup enter campus using the real summer access procedure.
- Locate the water shutoff and demonstrate the approved irrigation control.
- Walk the garden and identify the priority beds/assets plus what may safely be allowed to fail.
- Identify the substantial lightning shelter or approved safe vehicle location.
- Review the heat/weather information source and the condition that cancels/reschedules work.
- Give a volunteer one duty card and ask them to explain what they can and cannot do.
- Trace a planned summer harvest into its approved food/donation destination, or mark “no food harvest.”
- Simulate a missed duty and show who receives the escalation.
- Write the exact condition expected when school reopens.
- Schedule the preopening inspection and handoff before summer begins.
Prove it
A summer plan works when the garden can survive the teacher's absence.

Common questions
Questions that expose whether the plan is real.
Should we keep growing vegetables all summer?
Only if trained people, campus access, water, harvest handling and backup coverage are dependable. Resting or simplifying beds is a successful strategy when it preserves the fall program.
Is automatic irrigation enough?
No. Timers, emitters, hoses and valves can fail. A summer plan still needs inspection, shutoff authority and a repair/escalation process.
Can parent volunteers take turns independently?
Only under school-approved access, screening/supervision and task rules. UGA recommends volunteer training, a coordinator, a duty calendar and handoff notes.
Should we solarize the beds?
UGA recommends solarization as one low-effort Georgia option, but performance and procedure depend on climate, season and local Extension guidance. It is not the national default.
What if a week of volunteer coverage disappears?
Use the backup and reduce demand immediately if needed. Close leaking irrigation, protect critical perennial/instructional assets, prevent weed reproduction and allow lower-priority annual crops to fail rather than overloading the next volunteer.
When is summer finished?
Not when the calendar reaches August. Summer operation ends after the preopening inspection, unresolved issues are handed to the school-year team and the garden meets the defined return-to-school condition.
