Flocculation plus disinfection in one sachet. A humanitarian tool for visibly dirty water that most US households won’t need — but worth understanding when your filter isn’t available.
The basics
Water purification powder packets combine two processes: flocculation (chemically binding suspended particles so they clump and settle) and chlorine disinfection. Most products use iron sulfate or alum as the flocculant and a chlorine compound for disinfection. The best-known product in this category is P&G PUR, developed in partnership with WHO and CDC and used widely in humanitarian response.
The advantage over tablets or drops: powder packets work on visibly turbid water — muddy, silty, or flood-affected water that carries suspended sediment and organic matter. Tablets and drops are less effective on turbid water because particles shield pathogens from the disinfectant. The pre-filter instruction (let settle, decant, run through a cloth) partially addresses this, but powder packets handle the clarification step chemically and more completely.
The tradeoff is complexity. The process takes 30 to 40 minutes and multiple steps: mix the packet into 10 liters of water, stir for 5 minutes, let settle 5 minutes, pour through a clean cloth or filter to remove the floc, then wait 20 to 30 minutes for chlorine contact time. For calm, organized conditions this is manageable. For a fast-moving emergency where you need water in 5 minutes, tablets or drops are more practical.
Most US households are better served by a filter-then-treat approach — a gravity or portable filter to handle turbidity, then tablets or drops for disinfection. Powder packets are a worthwhile addition to a full household kit for post-flooding scenarios where filters are unavailable or overwhelmed. Stock 10 to 20 packets per household as a specialized backup.
P&G PUR packets have a shelf life of 3 to 5 years from manufacture in their original sealed foil packaging. Store in a cool, dry location. Once a packet is opened, use immediately — the powder absorbs moisture and degrades quickly once the foil seal is broken.
One packet treats 10 liters — roughly 2.6 gallons. For a family of 4 at 3 liters per person per day, one packet covers roughly 3 days. Stocking 10 to 20 packets provides a reasonable specialized backup alongside your primary treatment system.
