The tropical picture is the item worth understanding here, because this region's hurricane season runs later than most and the basin is currently empty. As of the evening of September 3 there were no tropical cyclones anywhere in the Atlantic basin, and forecasters expect no tropical cyclone formation over the next seven days.

For Atlantic Canada the season's risk window extends well into October, and storms that reach this far north usually arrive as post-tropical systems: broader, faster moving, and carrying more wind over a wider area than their category at landfall further south would suggest. The damage they do here is overwhelmingly wind and coastal water rather than the inland flooding that dominates further south.

A quiet week in the middle of the season is the right week for the work that gets difficult later. Trees near the house and near the service line are the single largest source of outage damage in this region, and September is a reasonable month to look at them. Anything in the yard that becomes airborne in a strong wind is worth having a plan for that is quicker than improvising during a warning.

The other half is the outage itself.
